July 6th sun sketch
      #5958346 - 07/07/13 12:36 AM

Hi.

Busy day at sketching. Beautiful activity on the sun. I spent 2:45h in my dome drawing different parts of the action. I mentionned very often that I'm detuning my pressure tuner to work in simili white light to draw the sunspots with more details because in H-alpha small sunspots are invisible.

For the first time ever, I present you two sketches of these beautiful sunspots in white light and H-alpha. You can now compare the lost of sunspots in H-alpha.

UPDATE: I changed the coloration of the 2nd sketch to looks better on any computer screen. Less reddish and more contrast.

Andre.

Nice André,
It's a good idea to sketch in white light for this complex spot. The comparison is very interesting. Thank you to share this !
Just a question, in white light do you use your big Lunt with a special filter traking off the H-alpha ? I can't do that with my little one.

Thanks Michel.

In fact, its not a real white light. Its why I'm calling that simili (similar) white light by detuning the pressure tuner. This remove all the filaments, white regions and proms to let see only the sunspots. But the image is bright orange, not white like a real white light.

If you don't have a pressure tuner or something similar, you can't see in white light. Even my Lunt 50mm filter mounted on my small scope has an adjusting wheel to detune the filter.

Andre.

If you go directly on the thread page, you can see both sketch at once.

My god, André, you were right assuming that I'd be pleased because you gave us a real treat today. The "white light" is very interesting indeed. Many thanks for your hard work and most of all for sharing it with us.

Peter

Thank you so much guys. I'm glad you like because that was a real effort to do that for you. 30 minutes for each 2nd and 3rd sketch.

Andre

Ok André, thank you for the explanation, indeed my small Lunt has the same system.

Andre,
A wonderful series of drawings. I really like the white light details. I was able to view some nice detail myself. Our club was out on Friday night showing the Sun to passers by. Folks really get a kick out of it.

Ken
