what autoguiding kit were you looking at?

the orion mini guider package is $299 right now, and should work well if you're using shorter focal lengths (it says you can guide up to 1500mm focal lengths, although i've heard people using the mini guidescope with longer scts).

if you don't already have a dovetail bar for your scope, a vixen dovetail will work for those mounts.

Providing some follow-up thanks to all of your kind advice.

I went with the ZEQ25 mount and may in the future get a new OTA. The ES 127 seems to get raves from a value proposition so that may be what rides on the new mount. I think it takes Vixen dovetails. Is it not possible to use Losmandy dovetails at all?

My new OTA I'm thinking of relegating to an alt-az tripod for terrestrial viewing. If I remove the broken CG-4, is there some kind of adapter to make the remaining tripod alt-az? Or is it impossible and I would have to buy a new alt-az tripod--and do they accomodate tube rings?
