Have you ever heard about it? See fig. 2 at the bottom of the page here:

Have you noticed it in your images? What is it caused by? I can't google nothing more about it.

It looks like a badly applied unsharp mask. You should never get those edges with film development. Reading through the page, I am not sure this "authority" is doing anything more than going though a film-is-better-than-digital argument by making things up.

I will check again when I go to work, I remember there can be edge effects in film development, but they are not something you want and film manufacturers try to minimize these artifacts. It might be possible with stand development, but an unsharp mask is a better way to control edge contrast.
