Is D&G still around?
      #5962665 - 07/09/13 05:40 PM

I sent an e-mail to Barry and have not received a response. Anybody know about or hear of any problems?

It's not unusual for Barry to be slow to respond to emails. Try again in a week or two or try calling on the phone.

Don't email. Don't leave a voicemail. Just keep calling until you get him.

If you've already placed and order, and are wondering when you'll receive your scope, take any estimate provided when you ordered it, double it, then double that again, and then double that a third time, and you have your answer. Too bad Rob Teeter doesn't make long focus large aperture achromats.

Just make sure they have a courtyard at the retirement home. Mike

Looks like D&G are still in business: http://www.dgoptical.com/

I miss my 5" f/10 - sold it about 10 years ago to a scientist at the Space Telescope Institute.

Hmmmmmm, if it was an F12 I think I just might know the guy who bought it.

It's the 4th of July holiday fer cris sakes. He's prolly on vacation.

Barry is old school...telephone is best. If he's home he'll answer or return promptly. Been my best way to contact him.

Not all small shops have time to spend on the computer for e-mails. I'm running into this comment a lot on my O gauge trains forum; shop owners are recommending an e-mail with an old-fashion followup telephone call. Seems a common trait with these old-school fellas and fellow gray hairs playing with their trains...Company 7 in Laurel, Maryland also operates primarily by telephone. One guy managing the shop and they are often overwhelmed by e-mail.

Old school yes, some people like to talk to other persons, not use electronics to do it for them.

I'm very old school!

I wonder how it is that other small shops like Astro-Physics, TEC, Teeter, etc., all mange to answer both e-mail and the telephone? Seriously, there's no excuse to provide an e-mail address and then not respond to e-mails received at that address. It's just plain bad business/poor customer service. If you're not going to answer e-mail, don't provide an e-mail address. Duh!

Mi dos centavos.

Barry doesn't have a "Marj" helping answer his phone and staffing his office. Barry's e-mail and calls are often returned from his house, by himself, at the end of the day. It may not be logical, and can be frustrating, but it is often reality. In this hectic and impersonal electronic age I'm e-mailing less and one-on-one'ing more; the opportunity to one-on-one is an actual plus nowadays, getting to talk to a real person.

FWIW, I needed a backplate for my refractor, emailed Barry who told me to send in $200 and got the backplate a couple of weeks later. So there can be signs of life on the other end when using email only.

I'll second that. I ordered the 6" F-15 (this was in the mid 90's) and thought I'd die of old age before I got it. That was after writing - then calling Barry, repeatedly. I see he still is using my critique, re: the 6". It was a great scope. You must have a great product to survive this long with such.. lackadaisical customer service as D&G has. Keep calling him ! In the end you will have a fine scope.

He's got enough business to keep him going for quite some time. Does it really matter to him if he ticks off a few people by not getting back to them? I doubt it.

The last time I spoke with Barry (October) he was busy with both the business and giving lectures at a local college. He has a lot on the plate...I'd give him a break and keep trying.
