TEC 110FL dew shield
      #5966151 - 07/11/13 06:16 PM Attachment (67 downloads)

I have a new TEC 110FL refractor coming and I had a question about the "sliding" dew shield. Does the dew shield snap into place when extended?
The reason I ask is I will be adapting my SM60 Coronado filter for solar viewing. On my Pentax 75SDHF, I have the SM60 filter adapted to the dew shield. However, the dew shield on the Pentax snaps into place when extended and therefore will not accidentally slide back and cause the filter/adapter to hit the lens. I attach a picture to help illustrate what I want to do.

Not sure, but I doubt it snaps in place. I've never known about a dew-shield that does this until I read your post. Man, that is a beautiful scope and mount combo!

Thanks Steve. It's a Takahashi P2Z mount and the marriage of the two works very well.
Yes the Pentax dew shield slides out until just before it is fully extended, then there is a noticeable click and the dew shield locks in place.
Even if the TEC dew shield doesn't lock, I'm hoping it will be snug enough to keep extended with the SM60 filter on board.

No, the TEC110FL dew shield will not snap into position. But it is pretty tight. I need to hold the ring handle before I can slide the dew shield fully extended. When you retract it, you need push it with some strength. Much tighter than Televue dew shield, which seems to be too loose on the other hand.

I'm afraid not. It's rather stiff though, but I don't know if it will hold the Coronado filter, having never attached one to my 110.

A hinged tube ring placed just behind the extended dewshield would bring much peace of mind.

stick a small piece of duct tape or masking tape right behind the dew shield, to keep it from moving back.

Thanks for the information and suggestions. The TEC is scheduled for delivery next Tuesday , so I'll know for sure then.

Good luck with the new scope. I'm a visual observer, no AP, but I'm quite satisfied with the TEC110 as my main scope when spending winters in FL. It was originally planned as strictly a travel scope.

No, I got to play with one Yuri brought to NEAF in 2012. The dew shield is a pure sliding type, but unlike the Televue ones, it is very stiff and you will need to get a good grip and pull firmly (more firmly than I was expecting, and I was used to the AP130EDFGT dew shield which locks, but still needs force to move) to extend it.

As an aside, you really can leave the dew shield retracted for solar viewing- all you are doing is vignetting by moving it out. I expect you will be extremely happy- it's a beautiful little scope.

Steve - I'm a visual observer too and looking forward to a compact visual scope. If I'm pleased, it will replace my Showa f/10

Rich - I may end up leaving the dew shield back, but we'll see what works best.

That's a tough task to replace the Showa....

Bring them both to Fox for the star party and we can do a little side by side comparo (plus, I might sneak a camera on the TEC when your not looking...)

Congrats on the new scope!
