Quick Alignment & Observations
      #5966618 - 07/12/13 12:05 AM

I am a simple back-yard observer. I like to quickly find planets and the moon, and share the views with neighbor kids, wife, grandkids, etc.

I have a concrete pier upon which I place my Questar, using the three, short legs that come with the 'scope. The rear, adjustable leg is already set, good to go. The pier is marked for the front leg positions (starting at 90 deg polar alignment). So, time to polar align ~ zero. (We're not talking about super accuracy for timed photo exposures here.)

Now, set the published declination for the body in question. Set the Questar for the finder scope mode. Turn on the electric drive. Swing the RA around until the planet, or whatever, is in view. Fine tune the view, focus, and enjoy.

I contrast this with my old ETX90, computer controlled 'scope. Schlep the 'scope and heavy tripod outside and polar align. Then, use the computer control for alignment and finding stars and planets. Total frustration. It was very time consuming and seldom worked very well.

The Questar is a joy.
