M20.. a couple more subs
      #5966666 - 07/12/13 12:38 AM

The other night while I was shooting NGC6960, the clouds were coming in to cover it, so I slewed over to M20 which was in the clear. I got 2 subs before the clouds got it too. I looked at the subs today and they are the best I've gotten of M20. I added them to my subs from May and reprocessed. Here is the result.

14x300sec subs from May plus 2x400sec subs from July total time 1 Hour 23 Minutes 20 Seconds. Shot with my 80ED. No LP filter was used. Camera is unmodded T2i.

Thanks for looking.....

Nice image. Colors look fine, good details and no sign of clipping in the background. Well done.

Thanks for sharing.

Wouter.

Very nice, dark lanes give it a dimensional effect along with M21 - like that you can see there is a big neighbor there to the right. I've never tried a DSLR - are those the normal red/blue in the nebula and more orange in the stars or are they pushed? It really has a nice overall balance whatever the case, so I'm just asking from curiousity.

Jim,

Thanks for your kind comments.
I guess that is the natural color. All I did was to stack the subs and use levels and curves in PS CS5 to bring out the image. I didn't push is much. I'm really not very good at processing yet. I stopped using the Orion Imaging LP filter because all I would get is blue, blue stars, blue sky, etc. I found color seems to come through better without it. I was surprised I got as much red as I did since the camera isn't modified though.

As for the neighbor to the right, I did try a few frames of M8 (no where near enough) one night back in May. Here it is along with the original process of M20. This isn't really ready for prime time, and was only an attempt at seeing if Microsoft ICE would put the two pictures together. But since you noticed M8. I'll show the full image, and bad as it is.

Wouter, Darren, Madratter,

Thanks, I like how this one came out also. One of my better ones I guess. M20 is something I've always wanted to see, and AP is my only hope with my skies. None of the nebulosity is visible through an eyepiece.

Terry, Shawn, and Tim,

Thanks for your comments. Everyone here at CN has helped to get me where I'm at now. I'd have never tried any AP if I hadn't discovered CN a few years ago. A BIG Thank You to all!!!

Nice shot Robert. Even nicer considering the unmodded Canon DSLR! Your a bit more south in latitude from me and I had to shoot very low on the Southern horizon. Today,I posted my image of M20 that I took with my ATIK CCD. Our colours are quite similar. Nice job Robert.

Randy,

Thanks for you kind comments. I did see your version, and it is very nice. I was surprised that I got the colors that I did, given the unmodded camera. After the first few subs seemed washed out I almost gave up figuring that I wouldn't get the red.

Here's a closer crop with star spikes added. I don't quite know which I like best, but the spikes do bring out the star color a little more. What does every one think?

It's a personal taste thing I think Robert. If you like them you should include them.

You've moved from "how do I do this" to developing your own style
