Three Messier globulars: M13, M15 & M71
      #5966838 - 07/12/13 05:11 AM Attachment (89 downloads)

I find globular clusters a very difficult thing to sketch... and the more complex, the more difficult. On the other hand they perform rather well in my lichtpolluted garden (galaxies or nebulae are mostly catastrophic). All sketches were done at the EP, only the brightest stars are marked at home with a fineliner.

M13 is a beauty, but hard to put right on paper. Next time I have to concentrate more on the detail in the core. All comments are welcome.

After M13 sketching M15 was almost easy

Visually M71 doesn't look like a globular cluster at all!

Nice work Jef.

You are right, M71 looks more a nebulae.

Andre.

Jef,
Beautiful work. I think you have done a remarkable job on all three.

Ken

Jef,

You really nailed the granular texture these objects can have. Very nicely done. Its interesting how apertures of differing sorts reveal that - and the effect of light pollution on it as well. Smaller apertures while resolving only a few stars will give me a burst or flash if granularity then its smooth again while the bigger apertures reveal it in a its glory as you know.

Really well done.

Pege

No comments from my side, Jef, because I don't see how you could still improve. You caught the 3D effect beautifully! My compliments, especially since you did all of this at the eyepiece.

M71 rather looks like a dense open cluster to me with its highly irregular shape.

Peter

Fabulous sketches, Jef. I always find the granular texture of globulars hard to do but you've got it on your sketches.

Thanks all for the nice comments. A little bit strange that I made this week my finest deepsky sketches in astronomical twilight

Jef,

These are really fine globular cluster sketches. Excellent work as always from you.

hi Jef,

nice images!
You caught the right objects from the lightpolluted sky.

Bye Christian

Christian & John: thanks!

(Big) nebulae en galaxies are mostly a catastrophe. Clusters and (small) planetaries stand better the lightpollution.
