Eine kleine North American Nebula new
      #5964761 - 07/10/13 09:19 PM Attachment (21 downloads)

I traveled to a friend's home in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and really enjoyed the dark night skies there. Here's part of the North American Nebula taken with an Astro-Physics 175 f/8 apo at f/6.1, Astro-Physics 1200GTO, SBIG STL11K one-shot color CCD camera, and a Hutech LPS2 filter (twelve 10 min light subs with dark frames subtracted, but no flat field correction). The large TIFF file was severely down-sampled to fit here.

Here's a single 30 min frame taken with the same scope but with a friend's SBIG STF-8300 CCD camera , Astro-Physics TV27PH focal reducer, and a Baader narrowband H-alpha filter.

John those are nice close ups of 'the wall' portion of the nebula. it presents nicely in Ha band! I use that same telecompressor on my TEC when I use that scope, it's a great little optic. I may be moving to the Riccardi reducer from APM when funds permit. Interesting to note the differences in the resolution between the two CCD's.

Nice work on both of these.

I particularly like the second one.

Thanks Jim. The goal of imaging in Cape Breton was to see how much

I wished I had brought my Ceravolo 300 astrograph to Cape Breton for the one-shot color images, but that part of the car was occupied by my better half.

Here's a draft image (minimal processing, no flat field correction) I took of the same area with the Ceravolo in my red zone backyard. As you might imaging, it was harder to stretch the image due to the background light pollution. The "wall" looks vibrant, but the rest of the object is more washed out and the "Gulf of Mexico" has light pollution artifacts (that are exaggerated by downsampling).

I'm thinking of getting an FLI ProLine 16803 monochrome CCD camera to image a larger swath of sky with the AP175 & Ceravolo 300. That will give me square images with about the same breadth as the larger one shown with the STL11K images.

You should; it was taken with your camera & filter wheel (but of course, by me)!

My only familiarity with the term comes from classical music, "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik".

That's the source.
