Huh. I also jumped on the sale. It's a good scope - good price. But look what I just found: http://www.telescopes.com/telescopes/go-to-telescopes/celestronnexstar102gtco...

I ordered one of these today to ride on my Voyager mount as a grab n go scope. This will take the place of my AT72 which is now setup on me new Edge.

I finally received everything I ordered to setup the C102 GT. I bought a Vixen style 11" dovetail bar, two 4 in rings to mount the scope in, a Williams Optics 9X50 correct image finder, a GSO Crayford Dual Speed focuser and rings that fit the focuser for 50mm finder scopes, and the iOptron Cube Pro mount. The dovetail bar and rings put the scope far enough away from the legs so that the tube misses the legs (just barely) when in the vertical alignment position. I have to turn the focuser so the knobs are to the outside of the scope tube. Once the alignment is done then I can turn them to the correct position for observing. The scope rings make balancing the tube much easier. I mounted the rings about 9" apart to help eliminate tube flexing. With the 2" diagonal the tube weighs about 10.25 lbs and with the 1.25" diagonal it weighs about 9.75 lbs. So even with my heaviest eyepiece the OTA weight is still under 12 lbs and the mount does just fine with the weight. The manual that came with the mount still list the payload as 12 lbs. The Cube Pro is pretty much maxed out with the 102 tube but will work fine for a grab and go scope. The red thing on top of the mount is a 2 way spirit level that I got at Lowe's. I mounted it with some double sided taped foam squares. Should make leveling a whole lot easier than using the bullseye level that comes on the mount. The mount has to be level to get the best goto pointing out of it.

I haven't had a chance to get it out and observe with it but tomorrow night is supposed to be clear again so I'm hoping to get some time at the eyepiece then.

It seems that tube is now even a better price:

Celestron 102mm NexStar GT Optical Tube Only
Item # CE-102-98 Availability: In stock
Regular Price: $119.95 Special Price: $59.98

Seems like a half price blowout now.

Ok, for $60 I had to do this. I'll see how it rides on my Vixen Polaris. In alt az it should be able to take the payload.

It's a 4", and this should help me understand what I can see with that aperture. I understand I'll have CA, but at this price I can deal with it.

100mm rings on order. Since I can only use one scope at a time (I have one mount) the OTA can borrow the upgraded diagonal from the 80ED.

I finally got out last night with the scope and it's first light. I messed up the setup routine for the alignment. But with the moon out about all I could see was Saturn. The Cube Pro handled the weight of the scope and 2" eyepieces just fine. But the tripod is definitely maxed out and then some. It needs a better tripod for the 12lb payload limit. It's ok for visual observing but there's no way you could do AP with it and the 102 GT OTA. It needs spreader bars like many tripods have and it could use 2" legs. Overall I'm ok with the Cube Pro and the 102GT. It's just going to be my grab and go scope for those times when there might be a hour or two of clear sky available. I'm definitely going to spend some time learning the mount and it's settings. There's a lot of settings that I didn't even get a chance to try out.

The 102 GT OTA is very good to excellent IMO. Looking at the moon there was a very slight yellow - blue - violet fringe around the moon, the color depended on the eyepiece I was using. It's was not objectionable at all and didn't bother me in the least. It was very sharp and had great contrast on the rest of the moon and craters, with no fringing. The GSO Crayford focuser had trouble focusing the 2" Q70 38mm, 32mm, and 26mm eyepieces. I had it racked out to the max and had to back the diagonal out about 3/8 in to reach focus. Other than that I really like the focuser. I ordered a 2" eyepiece extender from Agena last night when I got home and that should solve the problem. It worked fine with the 1.25in eyepieces. The OEM focuser had a tube about 3" longer than the GSO. So I figured I might run into a problem with focusing some eyepieces.

I used a ES 11mm 82deg and 8mm Celestron Ultima LX 70deg eyepiece and they worked great with the scope. Got very good views of the moon. This was the first time using the Celestron 8mm and it's great, very sharp and excellent contrast. But it is a beast of an eyepiece, about 21oz.

Saturn was getting low in the sky when I got a chance to look at it. The seeing was shimmering and didn't give a good image of Saturn.

All things considered I'm happy with the Cube Pro but the 102GT is the max you would want to try on it. I will be on the lookout for a more substantial tripod that I can modify for the Cube mount. This is my first refractor and it's a real learning experience for me.

Same here. I did not need another scope but for the price I went ahead and got this.

Sunday night. Just ordered one for $79.95 w/free shipping, but now it's a whole package that includes diagonal, dovetail bar, 2 eyepieces. And, I think, a red dot finder. Ordered it so fast I just skimmed the details.

Tom, where did you order your 102 mounting rings from?

Doug

It looks like that package is "waiting list" now instead of "in stock." It does include a red dot finder. They have other packages though, here:
