Jeff, Were you using the z8 to see the ISS? I didn't see if you were.

Cool thanks guys.

Yes I use my Z8, it's a lot better then when I use to use my Classic Meade 8" SCT.

Rob, I bet it will look sweet in your 10" Meade LB. Also look in to some apps like Satellite Safari or just use the online data. I just prefer using the app so I can see the paths live so I can get my scope ready.

If you have an iPhone or Droid, you'd love ISS Spotter. It allows you to track the ISS and create alarms for the best passes that month. For example, the app says on August 3rd 9:47PM EST the ISS will pass over my location, SW heading NE with magnitude of -3.5, making the pass a 3 out of 3 stars. The alarm will go off on your phone 5 minutes prior so you can get the scope aimed at that part of th sky.

Hubble Space Telescope, that's another nice one too, it's a lot smaller then the ISS. That one makes some very bright passes too. It's amazing up there.. it's like 5pm traffic on a freeway but 24/7 lol.

What is a good Barlow for the z8 that's not too expensive? Also, the lens that come with it, are they ok for the time being without needing an upgrade too soon? I think either the telrad or Barlow should be first to do, but which would you change first?
Robert

I used an Orion 2x Shorty for a while. It's a good, inexpensive barlow, but be warned - it has no compression ring. What this means is if you start getting high-end eyepieces and plan to preserve the look for eventual resale, it'd be a poor choice. Both screws lock in and scratch the barrels, dig in and leave "bite marks", etc. I used it for months, but when I began getting serious with my eyepieces, I ugpraded my Barlow.

The two eyepieces that come with the Zhumell are decent. One is a 2" 30mm wide-field, and the other is a 1.25" 9mm plossl. If you plan to observe planets in any kind of detail, you'll likely want to upgrade the 9mm one day. Here is the 9mm that will come with your scope. It gives pleasing views, but it felt like peaking through a keyhole. Here it is again, next to an ES 82 8.8mm (the eventual upgrade.) I still use the 30mm, I like it.

If you are planning to get more EP's down the road, I would say get the Telrad first. a 2x Barlow will make your 30mm a 15mm and your 9mm a 4.5mm
The 30mm is an ok EP I used until I got my Hyperion 31mm. The 9mm I only used once because I had a Baader Hyperion zoom and I used that for my 8mm range.

8-24mm @8mm it's 150x @24mm it's 50x when using it in my Z8.

Here is a link to it so you can look it over and read a little bit about it.

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I GOT OUT BIDDED WITH 10 SECONDS LEFT AND LOST THE Z8 WHILE TRYING TO BID AGAIN!! It sold for 208.00. Guess I get a small scope and start saving.

Bummer on not getting the Z8.
When you do get one the 30mm is a 2" ep and the 9mm is 1 1/4. If you get a 2x barlow grab the gso shorty in 1 1/4. You will also need a low-mid power ep, like in the 15-25 range 1 1/4. I like the 25mm because I can barlow it down to 12.5. You don't need expensive ep's to start with, especially when on a budget.

Thanks Rob. Kinda disappointed on z8. Was looking forward to it. Maybe the 8" on here will play out in my favor. Regardless, I am gonna have to find something decent and close by before Sept. 8! Lol...
