About to make arrangements with my son who lives nearby (the orion is almost where the z8 was!) To pick the Orion 8" up this weekend. He can bring it to me on the 18th when he visits!!

Bummer on not getting the Z8.
When you do get one the 30mm is a 2" ep and the 9mm is 1 1/4. If you get a 2x barlow grab the gso shorty in 1 1/4. You will also need a low-mid power ep, like in the 15-25 range 1 1/4. I like the 25mm because I can barlow it down to 12.5. You don't need expensive ep's to start with, especially when on a budget.

I would get the 2" barolw so that he can barlow the 30mm down to 15mm. The 2" barlow will also come with an 1 1/4" adapter so that he can use it with the 9mm EP also.

Yes, this is what I have. You can see in the picture the 1.25 adapter. Most 2" barlows come with the adapter.

I'm a 43 yr old kid, but I'm gonna have to wait or get a LOT smaller scope. Lol... an 8" versus a 4.5 or 5 is worth the wait! Being in south MS a fan wouldn't be much needed, would it? I mean nights here are hot and humid. Doesn't cool much at night anyway unless its winter.

Yep.
A fan is to help cut down the "cool down time" to match up with the out side temperature. Just bring it out side about an hour before viewing, you should be fine. It really depends, but a Dob doesn't take as long as a SCT, so you will be ok. Best thing is to test it, see how long it takes to adjust. This done of course on how everything looks through your EP, if the seeing is bad, all wavy looking its not ready yet. But this also depends how the conditions out are as well. With your scope adjusted to the out side temperature your images through the EP will look sharp and clear.

If I decide to put one in, is there a place to do so, or you have to modify the tube myself?

Thanks Billy! I am so glad I found this site! Everyone has been so helpful. Arrangement made! My son picks it up Sat.in FL, then I have to wait till the 18th when he comes to MS! I can't wait! Thrilled that my wife thought of astronomy as a joint hobby for us. I think she will love it, and I was always interested in it!

Great idea. I didn't know the 2x barlow came with the adapter. I was going to buy a shorty 2x in 1.25 but will get the 2" instead. You learn something new every day.

OP, great news on the 8". Now you just have to wait until you get it.

I'd get the fan to keep the primary cool. I was going to buy the Orion one linked above if I ended up getting a used XT8. The price is very good too.
wow that 2" barlow is fantastic and I love the price. That will be next on the list of must have's.
