Session in UMa new
      #5990758 - 07/26/13 05:38 AM

Yesternight I did a short session in UMa with my 140mm refractor with iris: Sky rather bright with NEML ~2.5 (SQM 17.2), Seeing Pickering ~6.

- HJ2676 (HIP 66928) 27.7"DS +7.8/10.2mag. x40 faint at 1:30. Limit aperture 80mm
- STF1774 (HIP 66704) 17.3"DS +6.34/10.51mag. x40 very faint at 2 o'clock. Limit 100mm
- STF1770 (HIP 66475) 1.7"DS +6.9/8.2mag. x140 Rod auf 1:30. Limit 70mm
- BU934 1.3"DS +10.7/10.77mag. No resolution
- ES735 12.1"DS +10.6/12.1mag. No resolution
- CLB57 27.1"DS +11.2/12.4mag. Indirect vision at 1:30. Limit 140mm
- A1614 (HIP 68193) 1.4"DS +9/9.1mag. x140 Rod at 7:30. Limit 100mm
- STF1795 (HIP 68304) 7.9"DS +6.9/9.8mag. x40 rather faint at 10 o'clock. Limit 90mm
- HJ2694 (HIP 68132) 42.4"DS +8.2/11.2mag. x140 quite faint at 0:30, Limit 140mm
- STI2306 14.3"DS +11.6/12.2mag. x200 at 1 o'clock. Limit 140mm
- M101 (Pinwheel Galaxy) GLX +8.2mag. Sky too bright to see anything
- STF1820 (HIP 69442) 2.6"DS +9.1/9.4mag. x70 at 1:30. Limit 70mm
- STF1831 (HIP 69711) 5.7"DS +7.2/9.6mag. x15 impression of a wide triple together with STF1830 and HIP 69699. x40 hint at 2 o'clock. Limit 80mm
- STF1830 10"DS +9.3/10.3mag. x40 at 7:30. Nice double-double with STF1831. Limit 55mm with averted vision.

Some issues here with magnitudes of faint companions (compare notes ES735, CLB57, HJ2694 and STI2306).
STF1830/31 nice double-double.
Interesting session despite the bright sky and mediocre seeing.

Wilfried

Hi Wilfried

Do you have an alternate name/designation for CLB57? Can't find it in Skytools or Astroplanner.

Jerry

Jerry, was a typo - means CBL57 = WDS13549+5123, ADS8592 and TYC3470-00798-1. But even with correct spelling AstroPlanner does not find it - don't know why, because it is certainly included in the AstroPlanner WDS catalogue.

Thanks, Wilfried! I had better luck with Astroplanner - with the right name, I was able to find it doing a "Lookup Name" search on CBL57, and by the WDS identifier as well. It finds it in the WDS2012.5 catalog.

Anyway, now I've got the full list built and can try them next time I'm out.

Jerry

Just another feature of AstroPlanner of the many I did not use so far - amazing tool.
Thanks
Wilfried

Repeated this session with 235mm SCT to check the issue with magnitudes of faint companions but got not very far due to bad seeing Pickering 4-5 - but at least I found an error in my list: ES735 12.1" +10.6/12.1mag should have been easy with a C925 despite the bad seeing but again I got no resolution. Checking with the WDS catalogue showed a separation of only 3.2" - the second typo in my session list. But 3.2" separation should have been also rather easy with the C925 but I may have needed a higher magnification to resolve the companion.
Also a bit puzzling was BU934 1.3" +10.7/10.77mag: Again no resolution, but this might be due to the bad seeing. But curiously same hint at 11 o'clock as in the first session indicating a position at about 90 while WDS lists 265. As UMa stands already a bit low for me I will probably have to wait for next year to check this again - even if I assume that this was twice an illusion at the same spot by chance.

A very very nice account Wil. I'm saving it for my own reference.
