Not a single orthoscopic, nary a single one.
No plossls or zooms either.

ALSO, I don't have any B...Br...BBrrand...

um, I better make my exit before I say too much; probably too much already.

I don't have any orthos/Plossls/Brandons under 9mm. I'd rather barlow than deal with eye relief below that.

No Delos - I already have Pentax XW.

It's OK, you're among friends! Say it; let it all out, get it out in the open, and then the healing can begin.

For me:

- No Radians, Ethos, Delos

- No Meade Series 4000 SWAs, Series 5000 UWAs, no Meade Plossls.

- No Supermonos, No SPL (A-P Super Planetary)

- No 2 inch eyepieces over 35mm.

- No Plossls under 10mm, no orthos over 25mm.

- No 8mm TMB Planetary

and then there are a lot more that I don't have...

As far as what one can afford, I suspect many are like me, I can afford any eyepiece or eyepieces I want. But I am happy with what I have, few of them would qualify as "the "best" but they are decent, they do the job.

There are three " the bests" that are important to me:

- The best seeing.. this is by far the most important factor in getting the good planetary and double star views.

- The best skies... that darkest and clearest skies are by far the most important factor in getting good deep sky views.

- Being the best possible observer I can be. What I see at the eyepiece, my skills, my perception, this is where the real differences are, differences between telescopes and eyepieces are relatively small.

These three things, they are free but require luck and work.

Jon

1. I have no Naglers/Ethos/Delos at present, just thhave TV's Paracorr and 2x Barlow. Had many of them, but in the end went to XWs. Don't read anything into this, other than eyepieces are very personal affairs so gotta find the line that fits you like a glove. I will certainly get their Abbe Orthos when they bring them to market

2. No Konigs due to their poor off-axis. Exception is some of the Russel Optics Konigs where he stops them down to less than 50 degrees. Make nice planetaries.

3. No "standard" Plossls. Instead chose the Sterling Plossls due to their slightly wider 55-57 degree AFOV -- that little bit makes a big perceptual difference.

4. No preponderance of 2" eyepieces because don't like the excessive size so just keep two for max TFOV purposes. They get little use actually.

5. No Zooms. Although always fun when first get...the novelty for me soon wears off. Only exception I am thinking of is for the P.S.T. so might get one for that since that is more of a casual observing instrument for me.

No Ethoses because of their price. And nothing with a narrow field of view because I keep my specs on while observing.

No Explore Scientific. I had other stuff before they came along, which according to consensus, are better. Only ones that elicit my curiosity are the 120deg 9mm - as it's unique; and (if I ever get a large refractor) the 3in eyepiece.

Nothing ES, I can afford Televue! No orthos, If I want to squint, I can watch TV without my glasses on.
No Meade RG boxes, come on, this is astronomy not Pinterest!

But TV does not make a 25 Ethos or a 120dFoV 9mm!

So, what is NOT in your eyepiece collection?

The Zeiss Abbe Orthos are no longer in my collection. They are incredible eyepieces, but the CZJ orthos suit me fine when I need an ortho view.

I sold my ZAO-II sets and put the money into my retirement account.

Cheers,

Ron

OK. In that case, I don't have any of these things in my collection:

Saddle blankets
Spark plugs
Guitar strings
Navel lint
Empty granola boxes
Cans of WD-40
Safeway coupons
.44 magnum cartridges
Dog hair
Tea bags
Ancient alien artifacts

... I guess that's it.

What's not in my collection? Everything except the shorter focal length XWs, an ES 14mm 100, 24mm 82 and 34mm 68; and a set of TV Plossls. The XWs have been the work horses lately. The Plossls don't get much use, but they are too nice to get rid of.

.. I forgot the UWAN 4mm

I take the TS' question from another angle: What's not in my collection and will never make it to the collection given the choice.

1) Most of the generic plossls.
2) Uber humongous EPs like the Celestron Axioms (they probably wun fit in anyway)

Anything over 55 degrees AFV. I just don't feel the need and my long focus instruments are find with plossls and Orthos. Not to say the Ethos line isn't seductive - just not enough to motivate me for the price. I really don't need wide angle.

Pete
