Moonless Sky Calendar? new
      #5993007 - 07/27/13 01:14 PM

Does anyone know of an app that will give you the dates and times when the sky is moonless for at least several hours? I know it's going to happen during the days leading up to the new moon, and then for a couple of days after the moon sets early and you get moonless sky an hour or two after dark, but is there an app or web widget that will actually quantify the dates and times for you?

Charlie

It is not an app, but I have had good luck with this website in the past:

Adjust settings for your location. I like how it displays the black squares, which are the hours I believe you are looking for. There is a lot of data there, but read through the notes below the calendar to make sense of it.

Clearly, moonless nights are the best for observing the faint fuzzies, but we're often too quick to rule out the pleasure of observing during moonlight! There's a lot more that can be seen than one imagines--and sometimes transparent partially moonlit skies can even be better than soupy, hazy moonless ones.

It greatly opens up the number of observing nights, too!

It is not an App--but it is pretty easy to use--Blum's Farmer's and Planter's Almanac gives Sun rise, Sun set and Moon rise times for each day of the year: Upper States 45 N Lat, 75 Lon; Middle States 40 N Lat, 75 Lon; and Lower States 35 N Lat, 75 Lon. Also converts to Daylight Saving Time. And provides an Astronomy event for each night.
