What's NOT in your eyepiece collection? new
      #5993240 - 07/27/13 04:12 PM

I find the eyepiece collection thread interesting because I like to see what choices people make and try to figure out what drives those choices. It seems to me that what people chose to leave out of their collections is just as important as what they put in.

There are far more choices out there than can possible fit in anyone's collection, even if one could afford them all. So I am asking what you left out, delayed, or avoided on purpose.

We're talking personal preferences here, so saying "I don't like the Omni-optic 68mm" is not a slam, bash, insult, or whatever, just a statement of preference.

So, what is NOT in your eyepiece collection?

I'll go first. No super-wide angle EPs. They are too heavy for my Dobs. My 8" and 12.5" are balance-critical and heavy EPs would make them unbalanced. Also, no Paracor because 1. I have no super-wide EPS and 2. weight.

Plossls. I've been slowly replacing them with ES 68/82's. The only one I have left is the Sterling 17mm, which only gets used on full moon's and white-light solar observing. I really, really like wide field eyepieces. One day i'll sell my ES collection and migrate to a 2" light path, preferably the ES 100's. For now, i'm content.

What's not in my eyepiece collection:

- Eyepieces over 40mm focal length. I sold all of them soon after I sold my C4R (4" f/9.8 achromat).
- Naglers, except for the two Nagler Zooms (I'd like a 31mm Type 5)
- Panoptics (I never wanted any of them enough to buy one, used or new)
- Ethos (I'd like a 13mm)
- RKE's, except for a bino pair of the 28.7mm
- UO Volcano Top Orthos (replaced them all with BGO's, other orthos, etc.)
- TMB Planetaries
- Kellners, except for an odd straggler here and there
- Plossls, except for TeleVue, Sterling and a couple Meade 3000's
- Ramsdens
- Huygens, except for a CZJ H-16 and a CZJ H-25

Mike

Everything I've bought, I've kept. Except the ES's; so I have NO ES's in my collection. Although, I may buy them again some day....

I have left out all those cramped EPs with less than 80dFoVs. And I am replacing all my 82s with 100s.

I am now starting to observe with my eyeglasses. All purchases in the last year have been with 17+ mm of ER. Most of my EPs that I can not use with glasses will slowly be sold off. I am waiting for 82 and 100 degree EPs with 20mm ER. Until then, it will be XWs and an assortment of others.

Same here, except I don't have the 16s. I have a pair of 25s and the optical quality is stunning.

Klener's and Orthoscopics are NOT in my collection.
I had some about 25 years ago, and traded them all for plossls. The 40 to 45 or 50 degree field is way to restrictive for me.
Some people like Orthos for critical planetary observation, but TV plossls are sharp enough for my critical observations.
Most of the time I prefer wide field eyepieces.
I have the entire set of Meade 4000 series Super Wides and Ultra Wides, and still love them.
Although I've added 5 of the the new ES 82 degree eyepieces in the past year, and I love those too.

Steve

Any of the Delos or Ethos series (but I'll gladly accept any that are bestowed upon me as gifts!)

Apart from one 2nd. hand TV 32mm Plossl I have no "premium" EPs.
Too big, too heavy, too expensive and in my opinion overrated.

Nothing generation 1, 2, or 3 .... when gen 4, 5, 6 is available.
Nothing ES, I can afford Televue!
No orthos, If I want to squint, I can watch TV without my glasses on.
No Meade RG boxes, come on, this is astronomy not Pinterest!

WO SWAN eyepieces. They were wide, yes. They were also lower in contrast than the ubiquitous Meade 26mm Plossl.

You guys are missing out on the Kellners, though. I have a 9mm K that is my best eyepiece for Saturn, ever. GW

I'm assuming you mean "what type of stuff".

The super expensive stuff that I'd have if it were cheaper (or I richer). ZAO's, Ethoses, that sort of thing. Otherwise, I have and enjoy most of the types of EPs.

Any eyepiece with a larger f.l. than 32mm or any zoom other than the Nagler 3-6mm.

+1

Nice idea, and so simple . BTW, an excellent candidate for next thread "What famous eyepiece brands would you prefer as a gift from CN fellows"
