Swift 839

Today i picked up a swift 839 60mm frac, seems like a 1961 vintage, complete with box and all bits in rather good condition, i plan to rig it up on the AZ4 mount. Is it true swift became Takahashi?

You have found one great scope. I don't believe Swift became Takahashi, rather Swift bought components from Tak (they originally made castings for optical companies). At some point,Takahashi started making complete scopes. The earliest Swift scopes are from 1960. I have an 831 from 1960 and it is a great scope with great optics. It's very much like the earliest Taks, so there might be some connection, but I'd not go so far as to say Swift became Takahashi. Enjoy that scope.

Make sure you add you scope to the Swift Registry here on CN.

Had a quick first light with this little swift, using a hybrid diagonal and 1.25 ortho`s, very very good, superb optics

There is little doubt there is some connection between Swift and Takahashi. The problem is one of finding some substantive documentation. I would love to say my 831 is indeed an early form of Takahashi, but I can't. I also have a Swift Aerolite which is without a doubt a rebranded Carton made scope, not a Carton by Swift. I hope more real evidence of links Swift & Takahashi come to light, but until then, I have a great performing Swift 831.

For those who haven't seen this site, it contains a few interesting bits of Takahashi lore.

That's part of Galakuma's web site and it's filled with good stuff. He is pretty certain the AVA (or AMA) and the infinity sign were trademarks of Takahashi. The early Swifts have the infinity symbol like this one:

Is that what it was called !, (or your name for it)
apart from mine (white) and a green one yours is the only
other one I have seen, from what I can gather made in the west country
by a boat builder, very well made and better than what's available now, barring £££££,

Steve

My dome is a white 2.7m Hercules, they also made a smaller 2.2m dome called the CASSIOPEIA .

After doing some checking, seems this little swift is 1964 not 61, i have fitted a dovetail bar, and now found a used super track AZ mount to use it with....a case of old meets new
