Stacking software... what's your favorite ?
      #6027522 - 08/15/13 04:07 PM

Stacking software is all about reducing noise and not about making things brighter but which one is Your favorite stacking software ... and why?

Well ... Deep Sky Stacker is in my experience completely useless for lunar/planetary work, whilst the others with the possible exception of Regim (which I've never used) are almost completely useless for deep sky work.

I've used several versions of Registax, which I prefer for planetary (single alignment point) work. I far prefer Avistack (which you haven't listed) for lunar or solar surface work. AutoStakkert!2? Yes, I've tried it, but I don't feel in control the way I do with Registax or Avistack. It's main good point is that it produces a halfway decent image much faster than the others.

Strictly planetary here, and I use Autostakkert for stacking and Registax for wavelets. My hunch (though I could be wrong) is that Registax 6 is Cor's last version. Emil is constantly tweaking AS!2. I haven't looked at Avistack in a long time, don't know if the author is still working on it. I do not use Avi's and I recall it was limited to Avi's.

Autostakkert for lunar captures.

AS!2 for planetary
AVIStack for lunar/solar surfaces

Well, what ain't broke don't need fixin' ;-)

The version of Avistack I have is perfectly happy to work with image sequences (fit, tif, bmp) as well as AVI movies.

For right now what I use are:
DSS for deep sky stuff
AS!2 for planetary/solar/lunar

For processing my planetary stuff, I use Registax6 for wavelets before going to photoshop and doing final touches.

For solar/lunar, I just use Photoshop + AstraImage lucy/richardson deconvolution. I just can't get equal sharpening with Registax wavelets that I can with AI's l/r routines.

I gave AviStack a try but gave up with it a while ago because It didn't really like my compressed .avis from my old webcam. I haven't used it since upgrading my camera, I may have to give it a look and do a comparison with results I get from AS!2.

You really want to be recording AVIs uncompressed - throw away information & addding compression artifacts really doesn't help any image processing software ...

I guess it must be a bit confusing for beginners as some capture software can perform stacking, etc...
We should make an overview of available software to guide, film, post-process... every step in the AP process
An overview of "stacking-software":

you should also mention
Iris : http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/us/iris/iris.htm
Prism : http://www.prism-astro.com/fr/

During a long time, Iris was the best. But not easy to use.

I've used Prism a lot. Few years ago, this soft was the one that gave the best result for planetary processing, and it had a batch mode before all the over sofwares.

To process the images done with the 1 meter telescope of the Pic du Midi Avistack has been alway bad.

Registax was no very good before the version 6. But the version 6 gives very good results on the planets and the Moon.

Autostakkert gives also good results now. This soft is abble to process a long sery of fits very easely. This was great for my last run on Uranus.

To processe *.ser files, I've made yet done a contest between Registax 6 and Autostakker.

I prefer Autostakkert2 for planetary work, and AVIStack2 for solar Ha and white light images, but Registax6 for Lunar images. All are then sharpened in Registax and MaximDL. It seems only AVIStack 2 can properly apply flats and darks; Registax fails at this badly. And Flats are very important for large chips because its virtually impossible to keep dust of the detector.
