Was observing the Moon last night when I noticed a weird effect on the crater Pitatus (south west of Straight Wall). The floor of the crater was mostly in shadow, but a few things caught my eye. One, is that the central peak was well off center. More significantly, the floor of the crater SEEMED to be illuminated by the central peak. There were like a couple of flaring "spotlights" shining on spots inside the crater floor to the north-northeast and south-southeast while the surrounding crater floor remained mostly in darkness.
It seems unlikely that the central peak provided reflected illumination of parts of the crater floor and that the effect was due to a very uneven elevation in the crater's floor. Nonetheless, has anyone else notice that effect? It was uncanny.
