Nova Delphini
      #6027810 - 08/15/13 06:41 PM Attachment (39 downloads)

This is a drawing of the nova that appeared in Delphinus near the planetary nebula NGC-6905. I made this sketch with my 10-inch F/4.5 Dob and a 24mm Explore Scientific 82 degree eyepiece which yielded a magnification of 55X and a true field of view about 1.5 degrees across. The nova shone with a yellowish white color at about magnitude +5.7 or so, I was just able to see it with the unaided eye from my driveway, where I also made this drawing. I used black paper with Prismacolor pastel pencils for the final drawing. I was quite surprised to get a hole in the clouds last night, which I promptly used to look for Nova Delphini as soon as I got wind of it.

Taras,

Nicely captured. I saw it visually yesterday but did not sketch. We have a lot of fires here so I don't think I will see it here through the smoke again.

Wow! Thanks for pointing the nova out to me, Taras, because I wasn't aware of it. The drawing you made is just lovely. I'm particularly impressed by the way you've sketched the planetary. It's as if you could keep looking at it and discover more detail with every second!

Peter

Very nice indeed! I like the fact that you included NGC-6905 in the FOV sketch.

Taras,

Nice drawing. The nova has brightened considerably since you saw it--hope you got to look again. You got a much better view of NGC 6905 than I did. I was sort of underwhelmed by the PN but I'm sure that was due to conditions and the low magnification I used.

Taras,

A very fine sketch of the nova in Del. It is really good to see the star plots and planetary nebula which is not far away.
Of course when I got the alert notice from AAVSO it was cloudy and has been ever since. This one may stay bright for a while so I'm going to see it the next clear night.
Thanks to you and Michael I should be able to find it easily.

Frank

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the encouragement. Hopefully we'll all get a chance to watch this nova reach it's height then fade away. I might get another chance to observe it tommorow night, or the following night.

Very fine and captivating sketch. Thank you for sharing this.
I've not seen this nova ( much to my regret we've had many cloudy nights and now the moon has taken over ) so I'm really appreciative of the work posted on this website!
