I have a ES127 APO on a CGEM and it only needs one weight to balance

A CGEM comes with a 17lb CW and an AVX comes with an 11lb CW.

Which ES127 do you have. They made a few of different weight? All of which are fairly heavy. I would say Yes, you will need more CW. You can get a lighter 7½ lb CW from Orion , that may be all the extra weight that you need.

I've never tried that but I have balanced two side by side 80mm scopes, with cameras and a heavy SBS plate with one weight. That lot comes to about 18 lbs.

A 6" GSO RC will also balance with one weight for visual work but needs two with a ST80 piggy backed and cameras added.

I can't do more unless you send the ES127 to me, I could try it and let you know

Chris

It's the regular edition.

Funny Chris!

The new ES are lighter than the old style. The new style has a rotating focuser and sliding dew shield. If you have the old style on order you definitely need two weights. If it is the new style, you probably need two weights but they are so new there is not much news available on them yet.

You can use a longer CW shaft or an extender and still be good with a single CW. This is what I am doing. I have used this extended shaft for almost 8 years with my CG5 mount to balance my C9.25 with a single CW. Now it is on my AVX.

Maybe one of the entries on this page can be a solution.

I just put my new white 127mm on my avx to test and it balances with one weight not all the way down the standard length shaft when I have a diagonal, red dot, and a larger 2" eyepiece on it. It is very solid, carries it much better than I expected. If I usually used this scope on this mount and didn't mind carrying two weights I might go that route to keep the weight closer to the axis, but it absolutely does not *need* two weights.

OK...to answer my own question, with the 2" diagonal and a moderate 2" eyepiece [stratus] the balance of the CW was 3/4 inch from the bottom. So I had to go with 2 CW that gave
plenty of "breathing room" on the post.
