I have been wanting to do a sketch of these three and have never gotten a cooperative sky. This was just done this evening 9:00 - 9:00 pm EDT. Had to push it a bit as the moon is quite low in the summer sky and was sinking behind trees...

Randolph, this is a real beauty, worthy of being framed. The detail is so subtly done and I also like the slight reddish hue you added. Brilliant!

Peter

Thank you Peter...I am going to frame it. Years ago I did astrophotography, but I find sketching to be so much more rewarding. When you sketch, you really take the time to savor ( and see! ) every detail that your eye can give. And with lunar sketching, you can use more light! Do you ( or anyone else ) have any suggestions for how to use red light while deep sky sketching? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm hoping for a second clear night...
And that is not usually the case here in the northeast U.S.

I totally agree with you regarding photography vs sketching. But whereas the red torch is concerned, I'm afraid that I haven't got any real solution for you. Some suggest to observe with one eye and draw with the other. But I doubt whether that's very practical. Personally I just wait until my full night vision returns and it is indeed very frustrating...

Peter

Fine sketch!

Use just enough red light you can see the stars you sketch. It is a difficult ballance...

Thank you Peter and Jef for the input re sketching with red light. Hopefully that will become more comfortable with time and practice.
