Whole Disc Image 8-18-13 - Skyris 674M
      #6032922 - 08/18/13 01:53 PM Attachment (155 downloads)

Here's an whole disc (single frame) taken with the Celestron Skyris 674M camera. Used the Lunt LS60T double stacked, Celestron CGEM Mount. Best 240 frames, processed in Registax and Photoshop CS3. Inverted to best show the flares...

And in a somewhat more conventional processing style...Seems to me the northern magnetic belt is weakening?

Great work Pat. I agree in the northern hemisphere. I hope that once the end of the polar flip is over sombody puts together a full disk animation over the 2 - 4 month period. Gotta have somthing to do with the weakning.

Thanks guys! Interesting to see the northern belt begin to weaken for the pole shift. I was not into solar astronomy 11 years ago, this is my first time seeing it.

Hi Pat
That is a great image - I love one frame disc snaps - the Skyris looks like a great imager for your setup!

Thanks all. I thought I would jot a few lines down about my experience with the Celestron Skyris 674M. The camera has a more solid and therefore slightly heavier body than other cameras in it's class. Since the camera is not actively cooled, I figured it is more along the lines of a "heat sink" aluminum body. It's not "heavy", just heavier than my grasshopper or chameleon cameras.
The camera itself works well, it's a Sony Super HAD ICX274 Monochrome chip, which is a safe bet for solar imaging. No newt rings to report (but I did not use it with a barlow either). The image is noise free and no bad, hot or white pixels to report on the camera.
As with most cameras, the real reporting is with the software. I am familiar with ICAP with the NexImage 5 camera, so there were no surprises there. The ICAP software has all settings on automatic when freshly installed on a PC, so the exposure and gain setting had to be set to manual to use the camera without over-exposing the sun.
Registax readily handles the .AVI videos and processes them nicely.
The camera chip size is 8.50mm x 6.80mm (roughly 11mm diagonal) so can easily work with B1200 without severe light drop-off on the sun. The resolution is 1600X1200 pixels (2 Megapixels) so you can make larger prints with your solar system images. The pixel size is 4.40 microns, so even at 12 bit A/D Conversion, you still have sensitivity for solar surface details and flares.
The chip size allows for full frame images of the sun in the Lunt 60mm and I suspect 80mm scopes. I don't like putting together mosaics, so a full frame image of the sun is just the ticket for me. I've ordered a Lunt 80mm APO scope for larger full frame images with WL, Cak and moon shots.
Only had 1 day with the camera so far, so I will report more later.

Hi Pat,

Amazing pictures! Thanks for posting them, and for the report.

Just looked for it over at Celestron's web site, but they don't list a Skyris 674M; there's a camera there with exactly the same specs (specially the resolution, which seems to be the difference between models), but they are calling it a 274C, not a 674C. Could it be that Celestron changed the model number?

Cheers,

I have no idea Durval, I will have to look into that. 274 would make more sense for a model number...it's a 2 megapixel camera.
*edit* wonder if that makes the 674 a "limited issue" collector's item?
