Bowling ball mount?
      #6033906 - 08/19/13 02:20 AM

Pictures/plans/ideas please.

I have an SN6 on a broken LXD55. Been wanting to try a different kind of mount (before looking at the VX).

Very nice! Does it work well without major issues? Why aren't more people doing this?

Do I just use a regular drill? How to dead-center a sphere?

Ingenious. I'll bet that is a pretty solid mount with no damping problems, yes?

Find a metal ring - I got the ground outer ring of a big bearing.

Clamp it to the bed of drilling machine, and clock it, so it is centred under the chuck - low enough thatthe ball will fit !

Drill. The drill axis will be exactly on the sphere's.

I had fun with this project earlier this year. It was easy to do and fun to play around with.

Here is the original "bowling ball" Newtonian mount. It has a most distinguished lineage!

Kfrederick, nice work there!!

I like it when users find economical ways to make things work in this hobby. I'll bet that scope moves really well when you are at the eyepiece.
