Want advice on LX90 and got some basic q's... new
      #5647 - 08/04/03 08:48 PM

Okay, i sat down and thought about it some one said on here i should go with a LX90 instead of a LX200 due to its price. And i thought about it and i figured its cheaper what ever i buy for it i could use on a lx200 and i dont have mounds of cash now.

Any ways i am REALLY wanting a 10" but i see the only 10" meade Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope is the LX200 which i would love to have. But i figure if i really like the LX90 in a few years i could sell off the LX90 and get the LX200.

Okay Q and A time. Heres the old battle scope size. I couldnt find any info on what you can see with a 8" vs 10" so basically what can seen in a 8"? (light pollution permitting). And what can you see in a 10" that you cant in a 8? I would be getting the UHTC coating too. I could be interested in nebula such has the viel, ring, N. american, etc. And most galaxys. It might be better to ask at what magnitude would this scope stop being effective?

Every thing I get for this scope i could use a LX200? If i got into astrography will it be a good scope to start with? i could basiclly just be using a SLR camera or Digital. Does it track well enough to do astrography with it?

thanks and sorry for my typos
aj

The size in SCTs increase your over all focal length of the scope, thus giving you more power and the ability to pull in more light faster. In the simplest forms because I'm not an optics engineer, lets take the Orion nebula as a starting point. If you were to buy the LX90 the image you would visually see is a wider field of view but the image would be brighter looking through the 10" SCT. If the optical quality is the same in both scopes the photographic difference would be negligent, but you would probably have a slightly longer exposure time in the LX90, again due to it's smaller overall aperture.

I have a 5 inch refractor and a 12" SCT. Looking at Mars the image is much larger in my SCT than in my refractor but the image in my refractor is much sharper than the image in my SCT. That not a real good comparison. What I'm trying to say though is the under lying point is The LX90, while it might have a dimmer image you should be able to take the same quality of picture through it as you would get out of the 10 inch SCT. It just might require a longer exposure and a little higher powered eye piece to see the same size image that you would get with a lesser powered eye piece in the larger SCT.

So there you go, is that clear as mud now. I hope I helped a little.

makes since. I just thought about this today at work and i rush in and want to know every thing now about a certain thing or product If i get my new job i can put away $200 a month (maybe more depending on pay, overtime, etc.) and if i get $400 for xmas in 7 months id have then then enough for the scope, then i got to save for all the goodies that go along with it but i dont think i can start saving until december, or until my truck gets paid off, which ever comes first

I wonder if the bank gives low intrest loans on telescopes..... not! lol The bank sucks, if im correct when i pay my truck off (2 years early i think) they will charge me $50 (i think) for paying it off early, WTF?

I have found you probably can figure 30 to 40 percent over the price of a telscope you see in the magazine. The reason is they rarely come with the stuff you need to get the best out of the scope. My Meade as a example cost 3700 dollars. Then they ask you if you want the power supply, that is extra. It comes with one lens, not a bad one but you'll need at least the 9mm reticle eye piece to do proper aligning and mount drive training. That's another 125 plus the 50-100 for the power supply, then you need a case, barlow lens, dew shield etc, etc. See what I mean. It's all worth it just be informed so you can make good decisions.

yup i was just figuring on a dew shield, power supply, and a few lenses and/or a barlow to start with then get stuff here and there once i actully got the scope. I already have a Meade 9mm EP. Do you know if that meade EP kit is any good (the one for $99?) i heard it was crap, then i heard it was good...

if you have nothing, the meade set it gives you a wide variety of eyepieces for a very cheap price. if you already have some eyepieces, it just gives you more of a selection. the series 4000 plossls are good. they're not 'high end' eyepieces, but they're acceptable, especially for $99 a set. some people like to pay 300, 400, or 500 dollars for a single eyepiece, i can't afford that, and at 1/5 the cost of a 31mm nagler, i got a whole set of plossls.

imagine what astronomers could have done a hundred years ago with a set of $99 plossls. many people take good deals like this for granted.

they work for me.

I agree that you should buy the 99.00 special set of possels from Meade. I have them but I don't use them anymore because I moved on to the more expensive eye pieces. The Meade possels will serve you well. I especially liked the 15, 26, and 32mm eye pieces. The high powered ones were not that good. But for 99.00 you get a fairly good variety set of eye pieces.

Well i just read on the Meade site you have to buy a Meade scope, send in a card or something with $99 and theyll send you the EP kit then. I read "This special offer is valid only for new Meade telescopes ordered and received within the U.S.A. after August 15, 2002 and is subject to change without notice." So i guess im SOL. I wont have the money till around x-mas unless something comes up. But i figure Meade or other on-line stores will have some sort of xmas special.

Heres my plan, I got a second interview tonight at 10:30pm (yes pm) if i get the job ill work it and my other job i hate now. Ill use the cash from my new job to pay for the blood sucking insurance company bill and my truck. Ill use the other job to pay for the scope. that willl be at least $400 a month plus what ever extra i have from my other job. So by the end of nov im figuring i should have $1200 from that one job then $400 or more for xmas. that takes me to $1600. But with this new job they offer a lot of overtime around x-mas (its a shipping company) so i should have plently by dec/jan.

Unless something happens.....

im hoping, lol

They keep extending the offer for the eyepiece special. You might want to call Meade and find out for sure.

It's the best $99 I've ever spent on optics. There are much better eyepieces, but you can't beat the price on the entire 4000 Series regular eyepieces for $99.
