Alignment star finder app? new
      #6035245 - 08/19/13 07:31 PM

In recent memory there was a thread, I believe in this forum, that included a discussion on an app that will identify alignment stars other than those found in most hand sets...probably for iPads and iPhones. Does anyone recall this? Do you know what the name of this app is? I sure hope someone knows this 'cause I'd love to get my hands on that bad boy Thanks!

Clear Skies,
Brian

SkySafari Pro lets you align on whatever you find.

You will have to use the hand control for go-to alignment. Only after the mount is aligned can you use SkySafari.

Yes, but it allows you to input new alignment stars on the fly. Or is that not what the OP had in mind?

The Apple tool/app that was discussed in the thread I am thinking about provided alternative alignment stars above and beyond those listed in most controller data bases. The respondent, who is also the software developer who wrote the app, indicated that it could be used to help find alignment stars for Sky Commander, for instance. I have a T-Rex with Sky Commander and am looking for this app or a similar one that can help identify non-standard alignment stars for my rig. I often view from restrictive locations and cannot always see the stars offered by the standard programs...

Clear Skies,
Brian

There is an Android Polar Alignment scope app too:

Found it! The app is called ALTitude AZimuth ALIGNment (ALT AZ ALIGN) and is available from the Apple Store for a princely .99 cents - and it does everything I remember. Thanks for the help gang!

Not completely accurate. With good polar alignment you can boot the mount and use a 'quick alignment' mode (celestron HC) then you can start using skysafari right away. If the goto accuracy is not good enough, you can always issue some syncs via skysafari.

Cheers,

Jose

Thanks for the heads up on that app, it's great.

Which list is most analogous to the synscan star list? Is celestron close enough?

As a side note, I use Sky Safari, and there are some custom observing lists that list out all the alignment stars that I downloaded from the files section of their yahoo group.

Mike

You're welcome Mike, it is a cool app. I think the Celestron list may be close to the Synta list but I'll have to check. And thank you for the tip on the Sky Safari lists, I just got an iPad mini and immediately loaded up Sky Safari 3 Pro - what a phenomenal app! My SkiFi is due in next week and I can't wait to sync all this up...

Clear Skies,
Brian

Finally going to add those list, I just got the Celestron star alignment list. Now how do I add that list to sky safari pro?

I emailed them to my iPad as an attachment. Clicked on the attachment, and choose to open it with sky safari.

Pretty sure that is all you have to do.

Mike
