Nova Del animation
      #6044457 - 08/25/13 12:16 AM Attachment (49 downloads)

Hi,

I made this animation of two separate observations nine days apart. Both were done with a 108mm reflector @ 19x. That's NGC 6905 in the 10 o'clock-11 o'clock position.

I used the background field of the Aug. 16th sketch for the Aug 25th sketch and just changed the appearance of the nova to match my observation. The animation was done with GifMaker .

Michael,

Very nice way to show a change in magnitude.
It was a very bright classic nova and I was glad I got to watch it over several nights.
Thanks for sharing this one.

Frank

Thanks, everyone--glad you like it. A nova is the kind of phenomenon that lends itself to animation. I hope I can add more observations to it.

Thanks, Matt. I missed the beginning, too. The first sketch was after the peak (4.5 mag) but when it was still quite bright. Would have been nice to animate sketches of the nova going up and coming down in brightness but that kind of sequence is hard to pull off here with our resident cloud cover.

It's impossible to see it at all with our resident cloud cover - full blown rainy season. Well done and congratulations, Michael.

What a nice idea !

Michael, I love this! I had the opportunity to see the nova on the night of the 15th with my 15x85's. It was brighter than I thought it would be. Impressive animation and sketch work.

Yesterday evening I observed the nova again and it's still about the same mag as in your second drawing. So again my compliments for your observing skills! I noticed a somewhat orangy colour this time. Can anyone confirm?

Peter

@ Norme--thanks!-- I know what it's like to stare at an overcast. It's been like that for months here (with a very occaisional break).

@ Tom--thank you.

@ Michel--11 observations is a lot--hope you can put some of them together in an animation.

@ Jason--thank you. I was surprised how bright the nova appeared, too--especially when you think that nothing was visible there just two weeks ago.

@ Peter--thanks! The nova has never appeared as anything but blue-white to me, but I don't see color very well.

Here are three observations over a 20 day period as Nova Del 2013 fades.

Frank, Randolph--thank you. Yes, the nova is fading pretty fast but there is always a chance that it will plateau or even rebrighten somewhat so keep watching.
