Edge 11 diagonal

I have an 11 on the way (should be here Tuesday). Is the diagonal that comes with it a compression ring type? I've read there are issues with using a refractor type diag. due to the element in the baffle tube as well as limited in focus. I have an AP Maxbright I would prefer to use.

It's not the compression ring type. It is the type that has set screws. Threads onto the back of the scope so that nothing protrudes into the baffle. I am planning on looking for a replacement for it as the set-screws will eventually mar the eyepiece barrels.

Its also only 1 1/4 at the visual back so I sold mine and bought a Baader Click-lock 2" Diagonal and 2" visual back. Solid, secure and super easy to adjust.

The 11" Edge has the corrective elements way up inside the baffle relative to the rear opening, like the 8" but unlike the 14" and 9.25". You'll be fine with your A-P diagonal and a 2" rear adapter from a damaging the correcter elements perspective.

That's what I was hoping to hear, especially after seeing the cheesy diagonal that came with the scope. Between that and the 23mm Axiom ep that came with the scope, they must be clearing out old discontinued inventory. Now to figure out which visual back to get....

I stand corrected on the eyepiece. It is in fact a current Luminos ep.

With a Maxbright diagonal I'd probably just go with the standard A-P 2" adapter that threads on the rear of the SCT in place of the 1.25" visual back. I believe that A-P recommends against using their larger rear adapter on the Edge scopes. I've tried the larger adapter on the Edge 9.25 with an extremely short nosed diagonal and while it works, there's not enough clearance between the set screws on the adapter and the base of the focuser. You have more room on an 11", but I would ask A-P for guidance before ordering up the larger adapter.

Standard adapter: ADASCT

Larger adapter: ADASCTLC

Link to both: http://www.astro-physics.com/

Warning from A-P about the EdgeHD scopes:

"Note: Celestron Edge HD scopes have a restricted rear cell that may not allow accessories with a long nosepiece to fully seat in this adapter (the AP Maxbright diagonal will not seat). It is recommended to choose the ADASCTLC27 and ADA2003 (or ADA20132) as an alternative when using the Edge HD scopes."

Good luck!

- Jim

The stock diagonal is indeed pretty cheesy, I kept mine but now use the clicklock v/b and diagonal. From what I can gather keeping the light path as short as possible is important for things like binoviewers so its def worth thinking about.

I think the AP v/b saves maybe ten mil' over the Clicklock. I think theres a thread over on the bino's page about that.

Well worth the upgrade, a few quality editions to the Edge scopes makes a big difference in perception as well as in practice. Mine kind of feels like an 'instrument' rather than just a telescope now, if you know what I mean.

I just sent an email to A-P to see what they recommend. I'm sure they'll help me out. It's the least they can do since I sent them a bunch of money for an 1100 yesterday!

Here's the response I got from A-P:

" The ADASCTLC has a safe nosepiece insertion depth of 1.1” (27.9 mm).  The PMDMAX has a nosepiece insertion depth of 1.4” (44.7 mm).  This means that your scope has to allow a 2” diameter nosepiece to insert 0.3” into the back of the scope’s baffle.  If you can insert a 2” eyepiece a sort distance into the back of your scope, then it will work.  Alternatively, you would use our ADASCTLC27 with the ADA2003 to guaranty success. "

I haven't measured yet but it looks like it should work.

Just as a follow up, I ordered the A-P ADASCTLC to use with a PMDMAX diagonal and it works just fine. Very well made and a MUCH better option than either the stock diagonal or the upgrade Celestron XLT 2" diagonal.
