Windows 8 question new
      #6043134 - 08/24/13 08:10 AM

I've just got a new PC with Windows 8.

Ever since, when I access the forums page, a side screen entitled RELATED SEARCHES continues to show, even after shutting it down, with every new forum page I open.

Is this something other users of Windows 8 have experienced, and if so, does anyone know how to remove it?

Thanks in advance,
Kenny

Kenny, I'm going to move your question to the Computer Forum; where more may see it, and respond with some suggestions as to how to delete that side panel in Windows 8, much quicker.

I only have Vista and Windows 7, so have not experienced this side panel opening up.

Thank you, Carol!

Being so computer illiterate as I am, I'm not even sure this annoying intrusion has anything to with Windows 8, per se, or something else about this new PC.

Kenny, I would guess that it's a new "feature" of Windows 8, since this doesn't appear with my Windows 7.

question for you Kenny... are you seeing this when using Internet Explorer in "desktop" mode, or through the new "Metro / Tiles" interface... that replaced the Start Menu.
I use Win 8 at work, and saw a million annoying things when using IE via the Metro Tiles, and now always go to the Desktop first, then launch IE, to see things as they were in the good old days of Win 7.

hope this makes sense.
David

Thanks David,

Unusually for me and PC questions, I DO actually understand what you mean!

The problem existed via both Tiles and Desktop access route, but was solved by altering a setting in TOOLS/FILE/SUGGESTED SITES.

Thanks for your help.

Much appreciated!

Kenny

Thanks Carol.

My explanation above of how the problem was solved is not completely correct.

Just to clarify, I discovered the permanent solution came about after selecting the IN PRIVATE browsing option, after right-clicking the large blue e Internet Explorer symbol.

Kenny, I feel your pain. My new lap top is Windows 8 and there are many awkward moments caused by my inability to adjust easily to changes. I guess I would call myself "computer little bit" One good thing is I've found all of the astronomy programs I use seem to work fine under 8. The only one I haven't switched over to this is Starry Night Pro V6 and that is because I found it to unstable under W 7 I just loaded Stellarium and run that. Good luck with your new computer.

My first computer was a mac 512KE then a mac SE (?) got tired of lack of programs available and not being able to share files with anyone but mac people. Even back then the macs were much superior to anything running PC OS. I remember people welcoming the "New windows 95" to the "Mac 83" world.
