Any news about EQ-8??? new
      #6040169 - 08/22/13 01:37 PM

Hello to all,

Does anybody know any more news about performance of the new EQ8 mount? In particular, was the PE amplitude (+/- 2,5") confirmed? Initial tests performed by someone in Australia showed such a low and very smooth PE - +/- 2,5" which can be lowered with PEC down to less than 1".

I consider to buy such a mount for my C14 with Hyperstar for unguided 10-20min exposures in narrow bands.

Thanks.

Valery.

Unguided? Can an EQ-8 take 10 min unguided at 711mm FL? Maybe you can use a miniguider for helping the mount

If to use a mini guider, then there is no need to buy this mount.

Miniguiding = spend more time, efforts etc. I like to have a mount with very small PE, smooth curve of PE + PE correction build-in. In this case a PE of +/- 1" can be achieved with PEC = no need to guide the scope at such exposure durations and focal length.

You won't be able to take 10 or 20 min subs with this mount regardless of the PE. Some reasons:

-- The objects doesn't move at perfect sideral rate. The rate depends on the position of the object in the sky

-- You need an almost perfect polar alignment. The kind of alignment you need to have is not achievable with Polar scope, you need a precision drift alignment run to achieve this.

-- Flexture, mirror shift.

The mounts that are designed for long exposure unguided astrophotography implement a very sophisticated system model and they compensate for most of the issues I've previously mentioned. The Syscan controller nor EQMOD implement this kind of control.

Cheers,

Jose

Actually, they don't, Jose. Mounts that are successful in unguided imaging have two things in common: sturdy build and low periodic error. That is what matters. ANY mount can be precisely aligned with the drift method. Objects where the sidereal rate might have a problem are those low in the sky and those wouldn't be prime candidates for imaging anyhow. I had the King rate available on one of my mounts for years. Never used it. No reason to. You are correct about flexure, and that's why you want sturdy.

Check out this thread on the Australian astro forum IceInSpace:

eq8 is here

The PE is extraordinarily low, and Australian and New Zealand owners are getting excellent results.

There is a hiccup with the current revision (v3.35) of the HC firmware, but those using EQMOD aren't affected, and Synta has already confirmed a fix is in the works.

This mount definitely seems to be living up to (and exceeding) all the anticipation.

When do we get it here in the US? I want it without the tripod!

Someone reported the Orion-branded version is to be called the HDX110, but I've no idea when it'll be offered for sale in the USA.

Thanks for the so useful link. Have read all the 27 pages. Looks like this mount will be the hottest product among mounts on the market. All mounts have PE less than 5" PTP and VERY smooth.

It will be definitely #1 in my short list of the mounts for my C14.
