Young Moon with Venus close by... new
      #60046 - 02/23/04 09:15 PM Attachment (92 downloads)

Quick snap taken around 7pm local time with Sony DCR-TRV30 at full optical zoom in digicam mode, handheld from my bedroom window. The only "processing" involved was to load the image in Photoshop Elements and "Save for Web" to get the file size below 60K. Unfortunately, the original looks *much* smoother...

Got curious, so I went outside and put the camera on a tripod. This shot is from the same camera in DVcam mode at full optical zoom, with some time taken to adjust exposure. 100 of ~700 frames stacked in RegiStax, no other processing other than to load the image in Photoshop Elements and "Save for Web" to get the filesize below 60K. As before, the original looks a lot smoother...

Thanks!

Unfortunately, it didn't translate exactly as I expected it to when dislayed in the thread.

I have edited the original posts so that you can see the original images, which do a much better job of telling the story... where taking a little time to think about what the final result *could be* can strongly impact the quality of your images - even when you don't have a telescope at hand with which to tell the story...

Bottom line... you will definitely see what I expected you to see when you look at the originals.

I'll remember this in future... As great as this board is (and I do think that this is a really great forum for the amateur astromer)... sometimes, you really need to give the user the choice to see what you meant them to see.

Charlie,

I saw the same scene last night as I was setting up my scope for my own moon pics. I was wishing I had a 40mm EP (just a guess) so that I could have had both in my viewfinder. But since the 25mm is the longest focal length EP I have, I had to settle for a few quick shots of the moon by itself. My shot of last nights moon will be posted shortly.

Steve

All the more for those of us who, due to weather, missed the show.

I didn't even have a scope available at the time! The focuser is off my scope at present in order to provide precise measurements for a custom adapter to be used to replace the old shifty focuser with a new Moonlite crayford focuser. The adapter is ready, and I'm off to install the new focuser tonight!

There's more of a separation between Venus and the Moon than you'd think. I have a 2" 32mm EP that I've used to look at the full Moon. It has a pretty wide FOV, and I'm pretty sure that I couldn't fit that view into that EP on my scope. I took that shot with DVcam only at full zoom, and you can tell from the image size of the baby Moon how widely separated they really are...
