What would this etx90ra platform be capable of new
      #5993949 - 07/28/13 12:18 AM

So I ran across this

I'm looking into mounting my canon t4i to my etx90ra
As I plan to try to capture images of the Milky Way,orion and so on

I remove my ota all the time and I'm planning on a eq mount in the near future

With the t4i,250mm lens, wireless shutter release

What do you think the 1996 made in china ra drive is capable of?

Do you think it's a waste of time?
Should I just piggy back the camera to my lx200?

I tracked Saturn I. The ep for about 5 minutes 25mm ep on a really rough polar alignment

That looks great!
You've given me a great idea for my ETX 90AT and my EOS 60D. Well done.
I think you'll be able to do pretty much anything you want with this setup.

Pete

I have taken my etx 90 on holiday to the uk and then onto Canada and will try some wide field with a 550d canon. I have taken off the finder scope and swung to ota through and will try and mount the canon on the flat base plate. And then use the three legs to tilt to Polaris and then just use the ra motor.
I will come back with the success.

Kind regards,
Mike

Interested in seeing your results.
This should be real useful for wide field images and
wide field shots of comet ISON.

So attaching the camera was so easy, one 1/4 whit worth bolt and the camera tightens up into the forward position.

Now to try at night.

Kind regards,

Mike.

You may be approaching (or are on the fringe of) maxing out the payload limits of the drive mechanisms as well as the plastic declination axis that easily snaps. I don't know how heavy those EOS cameras are but I'm sure they aren't anything light like a small finderscope is.

The etx90 ota is heavier than the canon t4i fully dressed

I'm referring to MikeMS posts, not your camera/wood plate creation:

I'm just making you aware that the drive mechanisms are not as stout as you might assume them to be, especially once you attach a SLR camera. I've owned a ETX90 and had it apart to closely examine the drives. Nothing strong enough inside to bank on. Hopefully yours holds up for your application.

The RA mount isn't bulletproof, but it is more ruggedly designed than the ETX-EC mounts. The motor control circuit is simplicity itself and very similar to that of the LX-10. For wide field use it's accurate enough, probably better than your average barndoor tracker. Here's my RA barndoor, if you 'd like any details on its contruction let me know.

Hi George, nice setup! How did you mount the finder so that it is parallel to the RA axis?

The finderscope is off a cheap Meade refractor. I dressed the curved base with a belt sander and mounted it wut the original screws. I just ran a tap into the base's plastic.

Hi George,
I'm still wondering how you got the finder aligned with the polar axis. Can you give us some more info?
