CGEM-DX Index Marks Idea and Electronics Help
      #6049681 - 08/27/13 09:10 PM

Hi All,

I've been here for years and can tell you that there are some extremely intelligent folks here, so let me run an idea by you electronics guru's.

I finally pier mounted my CGEM-DX. I just have it covered up out in the yard with a 365. Now I don't leave any scope on it so every time I want to image I have to re-mount and re-balance. Obviously I always lose my alignment because of this since the mount has no switches like my old CGE, and the index marks on the DX are a joke.

My idea is that I would like to somehow install some type of potentiometer, hall sensor, or the like, to accurately show the exact position the mount was in after a hibernation command. I was looking at some products from Spectra Symbol and the prices look reasonable.

So, what do you guys think? Am I off my rocker, or does it sound feasible?

Thanks

Good idea!

I wonder why Synta/Celestron haven't implemented it in their new mounts.

Hi-

I think it's a good idea. You may be able to do well just with a well-printed vernier scale. The trick is getting it to the right physical angle and stopping it, and you could manually use the slow motion control to get it right, by watching, slowly and carefully - and then turn the mount off or whatever.

It just needs to be set to the place it was after the last alignment.

A more sophisticated thing would be like the cge switches that actually stop the motor once it hits the spot. It all seems doable with some effort, but a good vernier might work well and be simpler.

Either way- I think it's a good way to go.

Frank

You could slew to a star and make sure it is centered, release the clutches to balance, and then make sure the star is in the exact same place before tightening the clutches back up. Your gotos will be fine and as long as you don't touch the alt/az knobs so will your polar alignment.

Mark,

Thanks for that. I know it says that in the manual, but I'm looking for something where I don't have to wait for darkness to mount and balance.

You could mark where the equipment is mounted so it mounts in the same place every night preserving your balance, if you use the same equipment night after night.

This assumes the star (and there fore the Earth) will stop moving while you balance your gear.

GoTo Page 15 in the manual. Read the section on Home Position.

To get what you want, Set a Home Position.
Install your gear and balance.
Mark the counterweight shaft and dovetail bar.

GoTo Home.

Hibernate.

If you have more than one OTA, just balance and mark the counterweight and OTA positions for each configuration.

Now you have a set Home Position and a repeatable balance for each configuration...

FWIW, this looks very similar to the Park and Sleep Scope functions in meade Autostar....

The mount keeps happily thinking it is correctly tracking with the clutches disengaged. You have to put the mount back where it thinks it is when you reengage the clutch. That will not be in the original position but a distance away from where you loosened the clutch, the amount of which depends on how long it took you to balance. Of course if the star went to an area of the sky where you can no longer see it you are sunk.

No problem Kasey. I just don't want this thread to go in 100 different directions.

Maybe something simple could be done using an Arduino board an components? Anyone familiar with these?

Looks like I may have something here using a laser and laser receiver setup. Now to integrate it onto the mount.
