Micro Four Thirds samples new
      #6049203 - 08/27/13 04:19 PM Attachment (45 downloads)

Here are a few m4/3s samples. These are all single exposure images. I only had about two hours to image so I didn't bother with guiding, getting an accurate polar alignment, or stacking. I used my GH3 for most shots. However, I used the full spectrum GF1 for a couple of the shots that had Ha light.

The modified camera definitely captures more Ha light. However, the noise handling of the GH3 is so much better than the GF1 that I really preferred using the GH3 for every object. I was limited to no more than 1 minute per exposure with the setup I was using because of poor tracking. Therefore, I used ISO 6400 for most of the shots @ F4.0.

ISO 3200 45 Seconds

GF1 ISO 1600 1 minute. You can see how much more prevalent the noise is with the GF1. This camera came out 4 years ago though. It can out about the same time as the Canon T1i.

This moon shot was taken with video. However, it was shot right above the horizon and through a layer of clouds.

gh3 without IR-cut filter AND with Peltier cooling would be even sweeter

Very nice DSO shots. You've motivated me to try some un-intensified shots with my GH3...soon.

Travis - very impressive images. Can you do a close/ enlarged crop of M27? My version from your posted jpg looks good

Yes. Yes it would. However, I am thinking that an EPL-5 would be a better choice for a mod. The GH3 is twice the cost of the EPL-5 and yet they have the same or very similar sensor.

Here is a cropped GH3 sample for M27. I think this is a different sample from the one above though. I was testing out a lot of settings that night.

This image is ISO 6400 45 seconds. However, I realized now that it was also one of the ones that I did Dark Noise Subtraction in camera so this should be counted as 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Sorry about the stars. I wasn't guiding and I really rushed the Polar alignment.

Here is what it looked like when I didn't use the dark frame subtraction. This image was very hard to compress down to the CN limits.

Here is the full spectrum GF1 image. The noise is very high in this camera even at ISO 1600.

And this is the same GF1 image with a little noise reduction.

it looks like these cameras have potential but are asking for cooling ;-)

I would agree. Especially in North Carolina where night time temps are usually quite high throughout the year. However, the GH3 specifically has additional passive cooling for the sensor because of its high end video modes.

Panasonic advertised this feature a lot when it first came out. It seems to work well. However, you can tell that the camera does heat up eventually.

I have been out on a few nights below freezing and the heat build up was definitely less pronounced.

You don't need to mod the camera for cooling.

If you move the battery outside the camera and use in camera dark frame substraction, you'll be surprised how low your noise will be even during summer nights.

Fantastic photos!! I will try next weeks with my new Gh3 camera. Can be interesting a external dc couper or battery grip for lesser temperature and less noise?

Thanks for posting these and starting this thread.

I wish there were more mirrorless ILC cameras talked about here. As you probably recall, I recently picked up a GF3 because it was cheap and I could use my old lenses on it.

But it can only shoot up to 1 minute, and higher ISOs than about 800 or so really pull a good vacuum. At the time I took this shot, I didn't have a decent camera mount, so I used a 1/4"-20 threaded rod and a couple of nuts to hold it on my scope's saddle. So, while I was fiddling with other stuff, I shot this 1 minute shot of some random sky toward the center of the Milky Way. I really like the stars with this Konica 135mm lens:

Now, I'm at our dark Utah site again for a few nights (though it might rain!). This time I have a couple really nice ball mounts for attaching the camera to the scope saddle and aiming.

-Tim.

Oh, and I did bring my Tak FC-76 that I can mount this camera on. I also have the Epsilon 130 with me, but I can't adapt the Lumix to it.
