Add Vixen Starbook to GP2 or buy a Celestron Advan
      #6057828 - 09/01/13 02:56 PM

I want goto. And I already own a Vixen GP2. Should I buy the Vixen Starbook upgrade to my current mount or buy an entire Celestron VX for $200 less money??

Are you happy with the mount? Do you understand the limitations of the StarBook (not well suited for imaging, issues with things like screen brightness)? If so, I suppose it would be an option. BUT...the VX will have superior go-to accuracy and will be better suited for imaging. The StarBook display is nice and all...but that is a hell of a lot of money for something that has never worked quite right.

I am happy with the GP2 but I have never used a Starbook equipped Vixen mount. I am however familiar with the Celestron system since I have a NexStar 8 SE and like the way it works. In fact I plan to use the goto mount I get with the 8" SE ota and my 4" refractor. I am leaning strongly toward the VX and think I'll get one in time for the Chiefland star party in october

For $800-$1000 you should be able to find a Vixen Sky Sensor 2000 plus a pair of MT-2 or MT-4 motors. That way you'd have the tracking capabilities provided by Vixen's gears and bearings plus the advanced features of the SS2K (dual axis tracking when desired for visual use, single axis tracking for imaging, and a polar alignment routine that works exactly like ASPA). No need to downgrade to a clone.

What ever I get as far as a goto EQ the GP2 is not going away. It will be the quick set up backyard mount for lunar, planet and doubles with either the C8 tube or the refractor. I know the sky sensor has a good following but I have only seen one for sale and it was part of a whole GP mount that someone was selling.

Ioptron offers a Go-To kit that is compatible with GP class mounts. A search shows they are about $429. Couple that with a notebook Ascom program would give a great setup.

I have often considered changing out my standard DSC/Argo Navis system on my GP with one of these setups, however, the Argo and DSC works well and can be used with a small battery pack for the drive.

I have seen the iOptron offering for GP in the past but could not find it on their site the other day.

I think you will be right happy with your VX. I like mine a lot, even though I've really only been able to use it twice since May. Fraking weather.

Would have going the SP2 and Sky Sensor 2000 plus MT-2 or MT-4 motors provided a better package? Better--meaning longer lasting or superior performance? Can a Vixen SP mount be upgrade to perform in a superior manner over a VX (for similar dollars)?
