Hello

Its time again to get those refractors out. Come visit the

Fall 2013 Mid Atlantic Refractor Soiree

A special event for Cloudy Nights Refractor Forum members and all refractor enthusiasts. October 5, 2013 at Crockett Park near Warrenton Va.

The NOVAC is hosting

The 2013 meeting of the Virginia Association of Astronomical Societies

and

The 31st Annual NOVAC Star Gaze

All on the same day and location! What a gathering of amateur astronomers! Please contact Novac if you plan to attend any of these events, and let them know you're coming for the Refractors.

Both events are free. The park charges for parking. Please obey all Park and Novac rules for these events. 90% clouds or rain I will stay at home. Come show those SCT guys what its all about.

It's on my calendar, too! I hope to see a lot of my old friends again.

Here is my rig at Star Gaze 2010. I will probably bring the TEC 140 out again if possible. Otherwise, expect the Traveler.

Cheers,

Ron

Looks like it will be mild and dry. Now, let's hope the clouds stay away.

Ron

We had good weather and good viewing. It was kinda hot and hazy for October. The sun had 4 large and about 8 tiny sunspots. Venus was near half phase, but really low.

Who are these guys?

This Brashear-objective refractor with Mogey focuser was used in Richmond in the 1930's and 40's. Restored several years ago.

This D&G refractor has an unusual aperture of 136mm, blue coatings, and a focal ratio close to f/20. Its about 10 feet long.

Long scopes need low power eyepieces. Both of these are sharp with no aberrations, but difficult to use in the daytime due to the long eye relief and eye placement. The Brandon seems a touch better optically but the eyelens is too exposed. It had some smudges from the public. At night they both performed admirably.

The Celestron Onyx 80ED on Mini Giro and Oberwerk tripod was present and provided some nice widefield views including some great views of M8 and M17. BTW, I had a great time as a first time visitor to a decent site. Cudos to the member of NOVAC for their hospitality.
