Full Moon Challenge 8-2003
      #6066 - 08/10/03 10:15 PM

This is the place to be; post your idea of a spanking full moon (no shots from summer camp please). Gary posted the rules over in the CCD section but we can repost here if you're confused. Full shots, no stitching and with all the dirt: ie. camera, scope & settings - processing software.

Winner will received much deserved ribbing and dubious praise along with many private emailings asking how you did it. Maybe.

If you can't post your entry here send your picture on a twenty dollar bill to Allister or myself. We'll make it gets the attention it deserves. We may even look at your picture.

OK; I'll start because if I wait to see what others are posting I'll change my mind. Here's Luna, through the trees and in the haze. 14" LX200GPS, 40mm Plossl, Canon A40 (full auto), unsharp mask.

Hey John,
nice shot, and I distinctly recall you mentioning the SCT angle, very nice. If nothing else it has sparked a bit of interest. Keep at it. You didn't fall for Rons $20 bill trick did you?

Hi, Gary.

Yes; Charles waited until I removed all the fast stuff. Right now I don't even have room to piggyback a small refractor; the roof barely clears the OTA.

The moon is clear of the tree now so I may give it another try. Vignetting is gonna be a problem whatever I do, but the exposure is obviously too slow on the one I posted.

Just swung over to Mars - too low and hazy for that tonight. It's really first light tonight on the 14" due to rain ever since it arrived. Sadly, it's so hazy that the moon is lighting up most of the sky so I may as well keep looking at it.

John;

Are you sure you live in Ohio? From your post I would swear you lived down under. Only those guys post pictures of the moon upside down.

Nice to see you finally got the 14" up and running. I've been looking at digital cameras again and the canon family has caught my attention. Send me your opinion off line when you get a chance.

Congrats on breaking the ice for us. 500 bonus points!

Oops. No excuse, either - that was a hand-held shot as the Digi-T held the camera too far away from the eyepiece and the secondary shadow was severe. Everybody's right; this isn't the right instrument for this job. It's just the only one I currently have mounted on anything. I want to get the Genesis refractor on top but nobody has a Losmandy rail for the M14 yet; guess I'll have to get one for a C14 and hack it.

I'm sure the first astrophoto attempt I ever made was the moon and a handheld camera aimed at the eyepiece. Here I am - no progress at all!

Wjoa,
it is an OK shot, don't sell yourself short. Besides it is a winner at this stage as nobody else, including me, has fronted up. My excuse is the weather, but either tonight or in 24 hours time I will shoot it, weather permitting. If all else fails I have one up my sleeve. I mean every good astro photographer has a shot up their sleeve right? And I am on a first name basis with the judge. $20 coming your way Ron, old buddy.

The no stitching rule forced me to improvise and cobble together a widefield scope just so I wouldn't have to blame the weather -- was bummed Gary had already "suggested" my idea when I got back inside. Don't think I'll ever try this again, but it may save some other poor soul the trouble.

Scope: 30mm Finder Objective with various extension tubes; not sure focus was ever quite reached. FL is around 140mm making it f4.6
Camera: Logitech QCPro 4000, 1/200th second; 640x480 in B&W mode
Processing: resized to 320x240 (believe me -- nothing was lost) and saved as JPEG in GIMP

Got my camera, and it's been bucketing rain ever since :-(

You guys have got me strugling to find something that'll let me take a whole-moon shot now :-) I don't wanna be left out, so I'm cobbling together something that might do the trick if/when the clouds go away.

Money back? You've got to be joking. I've drank it aleady; which induced some ghosting but that's another story.

Why don't you just duct tape the camera to the top of your 14"? I mean, it's only a Meade. Then there is the off center apature cut down, a four to six inch (100 to 152mm) hole cut in a mask to obscure your obstruction.

If that doesn't work, switch ends; use the eye piece as your objective. That should give a nice wide field view!

With so many entries I may bum the camera from work tonight just so we can fill all the medal rounds.

Oldfield; with your Ranger I would think this would a cake walk. Weather got you down?

Well, I've built a duct-tape special out of a canon eos zoom lens, a camera tripod, the toucam ccd camera sans-lens, and lots of masking tape :-)

It seems good for looking at streetlights and other mundane things that don't require going out into the rain :-)

Now all I need is the clear-weather adapter and I'll be set.

Dear Judge,
I respectfully submit this old image, just in case you see fit to allow me to grovel my way into this fine competition. My $20 money order is enclosed, plus an extra $20 for good measure.
My reason for taking this back door route is that as with the Ozzie Bird, our weather has precluded me from participating. Now ordinarily I would not worry about non-participation, but I feel that others are expected, nay demanding, big things from me. I am unable to deliver.
Let me also add that this competition has proved a winner, and I am tickled to see the lengths some will go to in order to compete, (and I am not just talking about me here).
I mean fancy cobbling together a 30mm finder camera. What about Neme submitting passbale pictures for the last month, and then throwing in two pearlers for this competition, looks a bit fishy.
In closing can I also ask that if the weather clears you destroy this image, and submit instead the one I send, in keeping with the rules.

Picture was taken 26th May 2002. Scope used was a Zeiss ED80/840 refractor (ala Oldfield) with a Celestron 20mm Erfle in the afocal position. Camera was a Leica Digilux 4.3, at 2400x1800. Lens position, and exposure details are not recorded, but lens probably in the "standard position, exposure will be auto (always is).
Processed, sharped (slightly) and cropped in Photoshop. Also rotated to match expectations for orientation.

Should I be successful in securing the aforementioned $20,000 prize, please allow part of it to be earmarked for the future generation of Neme children's education. Part also for the acquisition of a new laptop for yourself, and the remaining to be distributed evenly about this forum, as we all have benefitted greatly.
Kind regards,
Gary

You'll got some good stuff posted, but Bertha's is sitting on the back porch hoping the clouds clear up before she blows you all out of the Water. She has her warm up Blanket on getting ready for the shoot out!

Expect THE Picture about 11 - 1130PM CST. That's when the moon finally makes it over my neighbors Pine Trees.

Feel the force Luke
