Orion Atlas EQ-G Polar Scope
      #6066960 - 09/06/13 10:26 PM

Ok Atlas owners...I have a question about the polar scope that comes with the mount.

Been doing some research into polar alignment, and came up a couple good websites here and here. My question to Orion Atlas owners...did your polar scope come marked or was the hour dial blank...like mine? I'm also curious if anyone might know where I could find a marked polar scope as a replacement. Would one for an HEQ6 work (since the Atlas is basically the Orion version of that mount)?

Thanks in advance.

Mine is blank also, and I thought it was weird when I first got the mount last year. I now use EQMOD, and use its routine to polar align. It's very easy and seem pretty accurate.

All you need is the mount's RA circle in order to set the polar scope's orientation each time using the current Polaris Hour Angle.

Mine was blank as well and I got it back in 2009. I just used the etchings to polar align before the OBS and then I drift aligned after that.

I also found out that the polar scope from an Atlas will fit into a CGEM mount. When I replaced my Atlas earlier in the year I tried it and it fit with no problem.

Maybe I should post that in its own thread??

Mine brand new Atlas EQ-G has no markings around the polar scope, but I think rmollise's comment is good advice.

Yes the Atlas/eq6 are the same mount from the same factory.
The polar scope uses a commonly found M18 x 1mm thread originally used by Vixen.
The hour circle is of limited use being so small and having no vernier scale.
I use Jason Dale's 'Polar Finder' ap for rough polar alignment followed by the handset polar align routine to fine tune it.

Thanks everyone for your input. Looks like I some good advice to try out. Definitely will try out the Polar Finder program.

And rmollise, thanks for the tip regarding the RA circle. Will be looking at that for sure.

It is likely that the Vixen Polar Scope will fit and it is marked but as Uncle Rod mentioned one needs no more than the mount's setting circles. Google Local Hour Angle Method.

I use also polar finder program to roughly set polaris where it should be and after that fine tune using the synscan polar align routine. It works very well for me.

Polar Finder is nice, but the HC will display Polaris LHA for you as soon as you enter site/time information. I find it easier to get the position of Polaris just right that-a-way. Even better? EQMOD has a Polar Alignment Helper that, when set up, will precisely rotate the polar scope for you, and even show you exactly where to put the star in the little circle.
