Reliable source of "best of" list for doubles new
      #6072762 - 09/10/13 08:28 AM

I'm assembling a target list of the most visually impressive double stars, probabably numbering only a hundred or so. I guess this needs to be relatively easy doubles eg no closer than 2 arc sec, but equally not overly wide (needing change of eyepiece for widefield). I found several double star lists from this web link:

http://www.skymap.com/smp_target_lists.htm

I am in doubt as to which list(s) most reliably represents the true showpieces of double stars. Just randonly picking a star from "Alan Adler's double star lists" the first star I come across isnt even a proper double star i.e. 22 Orionis. My thoughts are to trawl through Kepple and Sanner NSOG vol 1,2 and collate the doubles classed as 5-star or "showpieces". Any other thoughts welcome !

start with the suggested list of 133 "showpieces" in the cambridge double star atlas, compiled by james mullaney. if you throw out the stars not visible from the USA, you should have about 100 left.
