Meade 14" F/8 Prototype cooling fans new
      #6077426 - 09/12/13 05:05 PM Attachment (55 downloads)

I once mentioned to Meade that eventually, when my warranty expired, I would be adding fans to my 14" OTA. I then sent them this video link http://youtu.be/H11mM2eiydc?t=4m49s showing them what I had previously done on my 10" ACF back in 2011. I received a positive response to my efforts and some dialog was exchanged.

A month or so later...

I am happy to report that for OTA's 12" and up Meade has a few prototypes out for testing. Here is a photo of the fans on my 14".

Did Meade install the fans on your OTA?

I should clarify. One fan (left) and one vent (right).

OK. Let's try this. Did Meade install one fan and one vent on your OTA?

So how is the testing being done? Are you measuring temperature of the mirror or inside the OTA for them?

A smoke test maybe?

Smoke em if you got em...

But seriously, the point of the fans would be to lower the temp of the mirror as quickly as possible. Looking through the eyepiece to see if its working is, admittedly, pretty subjective. Measuring the temperature of the mirror and timing the cool down to a target would be a lot more helpful in determining if the placement and size of those fans is working.

No doubt that active cooling works, but its about placement, how much air you can move, and how long it takes to equalize the temperature that determines if the product is doing its job.

I was just curious if this is something that maybe Meade has already done that with in the lab and now they are looking for real world feedback or if there is any measuring going on. I'm also wondering about vibration, what kind of fans are being used? Can you run them all night, even if imaging?

Since you are using your M14 f/8 OTA, do you recall what this OTA weighed including the mounting blocks/Losmandy plate? Someone in the CN Meade forum posted a question asking the weight of the 14" f/8 OTA..and I am curious as well. Not sure if you posted this a while back. Meade's website says 63 pounds, but not sure if this is correct since they list other OTA weighs that are in error.

Also, since this 14" is f/8, what is the length of the scope..it must be a little shorter than the f/10 models.

Also good that Meade adopted your suggestion on adding fans to the rear cell on their larger ACF OTA's..maybe they actually listen to their customers once in a while.

Thanks..

Bill

A quick update. Fan and vent seem to work rather well. I did a test today as it was fairly hot here in SoCal. Some more testing to do so I can get lots of data points but so far I am pleased. No vibrations noticed with fans running vs. not running. I hope to have something to share written up soon.

Cool (pun intended)!

I did some vibration tests on the 12" and couldn't see any effects from the fan.

I am going to, once things are situated, go for a 30, 45 and 60 minute single narrowband exposure. Why? Just to see if I can.

Don't have to get up early this week.

Well done. Is there a reason you chose not to do a push-pull fan setup?

Wasn't offered to me that way. No reason, other than they are not currently available for purchase, I can't purchase another fan for the other side.
