Vixen DED108SS new
      #6063901 - 09/05/13 08:11 AM

I just bought a Vixen DED108SS. I cannot find any literature - manuals, original catalogue/brochure - on these. I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could upload them or email them to me.

Appreciate any thoughts/comments about the scope too. I know it was a competitor to Tak's FSQ106 - which it lost out to - and that it was pretty limited production (how many??)

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on the new scope and I know that not a lot of these are out there. Hopefully, you will be able to track down what you are looking for.

When they were introduced, being a long-time Vixen fan, I was pretty excited as I thought they were quite a good looking scope but I never had a chance to get a hold of one.

I have a Vixen ED102SS and I've owned / used a few older Vixen's but I've not heard of the DED108SS

DED108SS was/is Vixen's answer to the Takahashi FSQ106.

It's a 4 element Petzval-Nagler astrograph (very similar to the TV101 optically). 4" focuser. f/5

HEre are a few pictures of the one I bought, and the ONLY advertising shots I can find of one.

According to one well known German company (:)), the DED108SS is SUPERIOR to the Tak FSQ106. Why it did not succeed is anyone's guess.

Vixen do make some lovely stuff. My first proper refractor was a Vixen, and I guess you never forget your first love.

All I have is Vixen after trying most every other brand.

I have "settled" with a Vixen FL102S and this DED108SS, with a GPD2 mount, and an SXW (with NexW board) mount.

Vixen maintains Japanese quality at a reasonable price. I prefer of course the truly Japanese made examples, unlike the newer Synta subcontracted stuff.

LewisM, Thanks for sharing! That focuser size definitely looks quite out of the ordinary from Vixen. iirc they cast all their aluminium housings (mounts, focuser) in-house; this looks to be a one-off, pity they didn't use it in any other of their scope.

fwiw I've been looking for info/acquiring an A100SS(?), a 4" f/5 achro big brother to the A80SS (made in Japan glass). I thot I'd seen it announced a couple of year back ...

It finally arrived from Hong Kong today, and I am utterly floored by the quality of the scope.

It's moderately heavy at 6kg, but there's a lot of glass - 4 elements in total (Petzval-Nagler design). Tube is hefty, focuser is incredible! There are 2 focuser tensioner screws - one seemingly moderates the rearward travel friction, one the forward. It'll hold a LOT of weight (seeing these were made to hold the old 6x7 film cameras). Never going to need to even think of changing this focuser (not that I could!),as it is pure silk (but I have always liked the old Vixen R&P's). The knobs are Takahashi-esque silver anodised aluminium, though solid.

I took a deep breath, removed the sliding dew shield, and partially unscrewed the 6 locking screws from the objective cell. I marked the factory position, then unscrewed it to remove the almost not visible mold spore. I did this (after carefully blowing on the lens) with 6% hydrogen peroxide to kill and remove the fungal spores (which is what we do in micro labs to remove fungi). Repolished with a fresh lens cloth, and reassembled. WOW.

Baffling is EXTREMELLY good, and it does appear flocked, not just painted.

Of course, tonight has turned cloudy Down Here Down Under, so no first light tonight. Will try here out visually tomorrow on my favourite tree to line things up.

So far, without looking through it, I am utterly impressed.

Lewis,

Congrats on a great and very rare scope. One of the ultimate 4" refractors for sure!

The focuser is very TAK-ish looking, that's a fine looking instrument you got there.

For the first time today, I looked through it visually.

I won't bore with details, but it was mind-blowingly spell-bindingly brilliant! Better than the Taks I have looked through. INCREDIBLE contrast, INCREDIBLE colours (no fringing, of course ).

Wow. Imaging tonight

Was smoky and windy last night. Seeing was VERY variable, with a LOT of star twinkle. Didn't even bother trying an image.

It will be CCD when I finally get one done.
