This might be a nice book to pick up, brand new:

From Levenger, a true color fascimile of the original Starry Messenger, with an excellent translation of Galileo's Latin. Apparently in a high quality binding, and with additional essays.

siderius

I was informed by email, my copy has just shipped.

Yes, this does look interesting. I read somewhere that Galileo made his living from writing and publishing books.

The very first telescopic "observing guide"!

In all seriousness, this book should hold a place of honor in every amateur's library. $80 does seem a bit steep, but for a limited-interest publication such as this it's likely quite reasonable.

Looks very interesting, but why so expensive? Why wouldn't they have mass produced this book for IYA 400th anniversary?

Hard to know what went into the current pricing.

If older first print books continue to appreciate, this may be the wave of the future, hiqh quality fascimile books. First in print, then maybe digital only.

Have your received it yet? I'd be interested in knowing your opinion of the quality of the printing and of your other observations, alancynusx2.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I have received it. Its very nicely bound and the translation is very clear and easy to read. There are five interesting essays in the back, which I have not had a chance to dig into due to work. I can highly recommend this book if you have an interest in the early history of the telescope.

If someone didn't want to spend the money on this book, they would still do very well with the paperback translation of Siderius by Albert Van Helden.
