Neptune, September 12 - now animated new
      #6076968 - 09/12/13 01:09 PM Attachment (116 downloads)

Based on Marc Delcroix's predicted transit times for the Neptunian white spot (Pete's spot), I stayed outside long past the point of sense last night. My wife's assessment of the night: "It's gross". Hot, humid, lousy transparency, passing clouds and mostly wobbly seeing. At times the seeing was average but it wasn't nearly as good as four nights ago.

However, Marc predicted the spot to be on the CM at 2:55am local time. I wanted to image a series and see movement but the conditions prevented that. I did get one nice image and one with the camera rotated. Also several runs before it became visible.

Here is the best of the bunch. All avis were 6000 frames in 900s and processed identically.

Here is a composite that has all the images I obtained plus the one above and the avi following, after an approximately 90 degree rotation of the camera. In the set at left, I've rotated the two last images to match the others.

As you can see, the spot isn't readily apparent on the 0415 image, though the seeing was very poor for that one as a cloud bank drifted pass, cutting me off for about 20 minutes. Thinks settled down for a bit after the bank passed until the sky went overcast about 3/4 of the way through the last avi (started at 0552).

Unfortunately, I only have three decent images with the spot, spanning just under an hour. And the end images are merely "decent", maybe only in relation to the others. Thus, I don't think I can claim to have observed the spot move.

Except in that it wasn't there on the early runs (the 0335 run came out pretty well - while the disk isn't uniform, the distinct spot isn't present).

Glad I caught the spot again, but disappointed not to get a better result over time.

Superb images of the spot ... really I didn't think this sort of thing was possible with amateur equipment.

I did however find a much more detailed image of the spot - look about 3 min 27 sec into "Futurama" series 3 episode 2 (A Tale of Two Santas) - the resemblence is remarkable ....

Ha! So, my browser brought the page up upon refresh to only your image. I couldn't see the text above it. I thought, my lord, someone has a good camera.

I saw a lot of Futurama but don't recall this episode.

Paul, top shelf image set and work! This may be over the top, but any chance that you'll make a .gif animation of the Neptune data? Congradulations and thanks for posting

Regards,
Steve

Awesome, Paul. I take it she had sense and went back inside? I guess there are elements of insanity to this hobby. My wife seems to think so.

Superb work Paul.
Not just a shot but several to see the feature with planet rotation.
Seems to fade near the meridian and bright at limb.
Probably an iced methane cloud with reflectivity variating with the angle of vision from earth. Not a spot.
May I suggest you publish these results on the alpo japanese site for the community. This brings a lot because a way of an expertise of situation.
Congratulations.
Stanislas-Jean

Thanks for the comments, all.

My wife definitely went back in. She is early to bed, early to rise, so it's hard to keep her out unless it's an early AM session.

I am working on a gif. The trouble is that not all of the images are good. I'm playing with the aligning/stacking parameters and think I'm making some progress.

Stanislas, is the ALPO-Japan site different than just the ALPO site? I've uploaded these to ALPO, PVOL and IOPW.

All sites are visited sometimes by professionnals.
Alpo is lead by Mr Schmude and this will be with him.
Good hope.

Excellent.

As Steve asked, I have tried to comply. I went back and changed some of the processing and massively changed a couple of things. I combined the avis for the 355 and 415 runs into a single 35 minute video. I did the same for the 530, 552 and a short run at 602 (this was about 800 frames before clouds just overcame the planet). For that last avi (running from 530-606 or so), I stacked 2500 frames - almost all of which were from the 530 run so not much was gained on the last image.

I also tweaked the settings in AS2, restacking on the first stacked image of each avi and normalizing to 35% instead of 55%. I also adjusted slightly the settings in LR deconvolution. I think the result was better and it let me produce a 6 frame gif.

Cheers.

Thanks for the kind comments all. I had a troubling thought during an afternoon meeting; I think some/most of Tritons motion is due to field rotation, not its orbit. I need to work through it but in the space of time involved, triton should only move through about six or seven degrees. It looks like more to me. I'm not really sure how to work it out with so
Little detail on the planet to line up.

So, some tweaks remain, I think.
