Screen grabs from two Samsung cameras new
      #6075314 - 09/11/13 02:54 PM Attachment (56 downloads)

Solar shots today (11 Sept 2013) using a Lunt 100THa with a Coronado 90MM Etalon.

While I used the same equipment to capture these images, I had to resize the second pic to adhere to CN size limits.

Both cameras are bone stock. 1st shot SCN-2000 analog camera

Thank you.

I'm confounded in getting the uncompressed AVIs to run through stacking programs (off topic here anyway), but being able to get Surface AND Proms in one color image? priceless.

They look great Tom. Good detail in both. Post them in the Video Gallery with details of the equipment etc so they don't get lost amongst all the other threads

Thank you.

I'll work on getting a bit more proficient on imaging first.
Besides, I had to order a piece I >KNOW< I have (but can't find) so I can introduce a focal reducer to the light path.

The drama of having too many bits and pieces

I have an MFR-5 somewhere and can't find it

Ken, If your anything like me it's attached to some other adapter that's no longer used. You'll likely find it when you find a use for the adapter and then it's "so that's where you went".

The other place my small 1.25" stuff often "hides" is inside deep plastic caps, especially the heavy rubbery ones.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned that although the specs on the newer Samsung net cams don't APPEAR to be more sensitive, due to the lower noise I'm able to detect fainter stars.

From the SNB-7000 with a lens set at 3MM last night

I found it and you were correct Mark
It was still inside a 1.25"-2" adaptor in a box of Samsung camera bits

Go away cloud so I can use it!

Wow Tom, there is certainly a lot of difference between the 2 results! The SNB-7000 looks so smooth!
I don't understand how you got the SNB-2000 so noisy though.
It would be intersting to see the SNB-7000 compared with one or both of the SCB's.

In the first picture, the sun looks a little egg-shaped to me. Is that an artifact of the capture or the manipulation to get the size down to posting limits (or, do I need new glasses)?

Lawrence,

It is a bit egg shaped. Between the two Solar Etalons and having to move the Sun off center (FL of system doesn't permit full disk) it's a challenge.

Ken,

If I read the specs right, the SCB and SNB 2K use the same sensor, yet obvious the back end is different. I don't have the Electronics background like others here to tell you more than that. When on the Solar scope, the net cams don't have the (to me) pleasant Orange tint that the analog camera does, As our weather improves more comparisons will be coming.

The smoothness of the "HD" cameras was surprising when I set them up for the Perseid meteor shower last month.
It is quite obvious on the Monitor, more so than the screen capture that meets CN photo size limits.

Finally, it is possible that heat had affected the 2K more, as it is mounted on a South facing wall, while the other camera is shaded from the afternoon Sun. The weatherproof housings are different as well. Did all this matter at 4:30 in the morning? Not sure, but note it anyway.

Nice images- so, which cameras do you have? SCB-2000, SNB-5000 and SNB-7000? I haven't used the net cameras in a while but have a SNB-2000 still - which at the time I bought it was the only net cam that did x512 integration- do the newer ones have longer integration times?

I have SCB-2000 (analog) SNB-2000, 5000 and 7000

The 2000 have a Sense up of 512, while the "HD" 5 and 7K Sense up at 60.

As we just barely drop under 80F before Sunrise, I have sense up set to 12 on the 2K cameras, and 6 (default) on the others. The analog camea is left attached to the Solar Scope.

Okay- you have ALMOST more cameras than me :-) Haven't been around the forums here in a bit but still actively videoing away. What other scopes are you using with the net cams besides the solar scope? Alos- you mentioned problems stacking uncompressed AVI's- what program are you using? Here is one I used before: http://www.dennisput.com/autostakkert2.html

Nothing like having backups for the backups, eh?

I do have Autostakkert. Best I can figure is that what is supposedly "uncompressed avi" from the Video Tuner card in the computer is being converted, so Astrostakkert and Registax can't/won't process it. I can however view the images inside the house over the network. So I can enjoy the cameras, but outside of single frame grabs can't share them.

As of now, the cameras are attached to DC lens and are in outdoor fixtures (Monsoon Thunderstorms and Meteors). In a few weeks we'll try a C-8, TV-76, a Vixen C-102, maybe even try it in the TEC MC250/12.

Hmm- maybe you can clarify- vidoe tuner card? Are you using cat5 to ethernet port for the net cams and rca to tuner card for analog? what software are you using with your tuner card? If you are capturing from ipolis software with the netcam you can change the avi format from mjpeg to h.264
