Thus far I'm not impressed with ES, but I will say the optics were a surprise.

We've had several nights with this scope now, and are very impressed with the whole package. No troubles or deficiencies unless one really has to have a rotating focuser for visual use. Your comment on the optics was spot-on. They do a fine job for such a great price.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see ES develop a 'chromacorr' for their AR152. I'd seriously consider saving up my allowance to put one on my AR152.

You would not be alone on that one. I would be all on it for sure. Chromacorr for the ES AR 152 would be awesome.

Great to hear you are happy with your 152. ES does a great job on customer care.

That's great to hear Jim. I was surprised to read that you got a new scope like that. I've said it before on other threads and I'll say it again, Explore Scientific has the BEST customer service of any scope related manufacturer I have EVER talked to.

+2.

The achro-seller who cracks the code of the affordable CA corrector should do very well with the visual observing set. Aries, alone, has succeeded in delivering a CA correction device. Alas, the magic glasses used were not cheap. Others who have been attempting to knock off the Chromacorr cheaply have ideas on paper, but have been unable to execute commercially. I'd love to see JOC do a couple of things; (1) bring out the affordable CA corrector, and (2) improve their large achros (for a price uplift) to the standards of the OTAs for the ED triplets (i.e., longer, retractable dew shades, better focusers, beefier cradles, hard case, etc.).

Regards,

Jim

ES customer service is damn good. I bought the 14/100 eyepiece recently which arrived in the new box, argon purged etc. Unfortunately the rubber eye guard was split, I emailed them to let them know and they posted another out the next day. Great eyepiece btw.

As far as my ES102ed is concerned I had to to unscrew the lens assembly after receiving it in order to get rid of a long grey hair, yeah....

Great scope for throwing in the back of the car though.

Jim, it seems like ES has gotten away from providing a case with any of their scopes. They are including a longer dew shield now, although it's not retractable. To add to your list I wish they would upgrade the finderscope. The AR 152 focuses by unscrewing the front lens. The one that came with my Meade SCT is the same size but has a smooth eyepiece focuser that works so well. But I guess I shouldn't complain about what ES includes with the AR152 as they've discontinued the finderscope and diagonal on their more expensive ED scopes. At least the achro still comes with a two inch diagonal.

I guess they are trying to cut cost like everyone else now days. The service has not been cut though. It is still fantastic.
I made my own cases for both of my OTA's using the foam that came in the shipping box of each from ES. Worked out rather well. Was way cheaper to make than buying one. Just have to take your time and look on Ebay for a golf club transport case. For less than $100 each I have a very strong transport case for both OTA's now.

Jim, a golf club transport case seems like a good solution. Is it bulkier in the "bottom end" than it needs to be, or is the fit pretty good?

We just got the case pictured below for our C9.25SCT. The $99 special total cost, including shipping, was $159. I got an estimated cost from them for the AR152 of $229 shipped. The case alone was $159, but if I can I might go the golf route.

http://www.roadcasesusa.com/99-dollar-custom-cases/

The total girth has to be under 125", which this one is. Beyond that dimension total, the cost starts to go up.

I'll get you a picture of the one I did for the 152 posted up. So you can see. Not a lot of room left over for it. Had tons of room left for the 102 though. Nothing great at all, but they sure work well.

Here are a few note that the light color one is for the 102 and had extra room at the top for more storage. The black one for the 152 has about 4 inches to spare and I used the extra foam to make a thicker end to it. Used 3 m spray glue to make the foam stay in place. Both were done for less than $90 each. The wheels make it easy and the handles are in convenient places for both.

Both sit flat also and roll easy across the grass in the yard too.

Thanks Jim. It looks like the black one is SKB, correct? Most of the cases I saw online had one end larger in diameter than the other, whereas yours is consistent lengthwise. I'll keep looking for yours.

Jim, those cases are fantastic. Much better than the flimsy canvas ones you see for sale for about the same price.
