14 hours on the Cocoon 9/13 - 9/15/2013 new

Fall came early and I got some beautiful clear nights to shoot a favorite. I blended the HA with R at 60% and did this as a strictly RGB image. Luckily the moon didn't seem to give me a problem so only had a slight gradient to work with (Love my Astrodon filters!)

I'm used to seeing more dust around this object, especially with that much exposure time. In fact I had a heck of a time getting the balance between the dust and the nebula to my satisfaction (and never did really!) in a version I did. Was the dust obscured by the background or did you process it out?

Thanks Terry!

Keith, was the dust from the HA channel or the RGB that you typically see? If it is from RGB then it probably does not show up due to the LP in my area. I kept the subs to 10 minutes in RGB so I wouldn't have to contend with the sky glow. I did not process it out, it wasn't there!

Thanks Pat! Thanks John, I was wondering what folks think about this as in some DSO's I like to offset them a little to give the impression of a "fly by" view rather than the dead on view. To me it gives a little more depth to the object but that's probably just my funny way of looking at things, it probably drives those with problems with asymmetry nuts!

That would explain it if most of your signal was coming from the Ha. I don't have the lights from my version on the computer I'm using now, but as I recollect the dust was mostly coming in the L and RGB light frames, and I'm in a Bortle green zone so the sky glow background isn't too overwhelming.

So now I'll be interested in the next new moon period to try some long L subs to see if I can catch the dust!

It may already be there with some further processing! It's a great image already.

Thanks Mike, it is there on the fringes, I just don't dare try to pull anything else out if I want to keep the noise at an acceptable level.
