Superb biography of the late Sir Patrick Moore
      #6091454 - 09/20/13 10:23 AM

The well-known amateur-astronomer & astro-photographer Martin Mobberley wrote an excellent biography of the late Sir Patrick Moore (1923-2012):
It Came From Outer Space Wearing An RAF Blazer

Check it out on Amazon, the reviews speak for themselves...
In other news: Sir Patrick Moore's house "FarThings" in Selsey at the Southcoast of England will not become an astronomy center:

Oh man, that's tragic! How can they just discard a lifetime of unique stuff like that from a guy who contributed so much? What does Moore's family have to say about it? (Or does he have any family?) Hopefully someone will step up and do something about it.
(I wonder if the pun was intended? "Farthings" vs. "Far Things"?)

Poor Brian May! He's never going to lose the title of "Queen guitarist who got a degree". Simple respect would dictate ignoring the Queen part and referring to him as Dr. Brian May - but no! (It reminds me of a joke I won't tell here! )

It's a great book, though Martin would doubtlessly have been sued by the late Sir Patrick because he didn't like being called out on discrepancies; read the chapter on his fiance.

There's nothing "poor" about Brian May. he made millions as the guitarist for Queen, and continues to do so. I'm quite sure he's happy to refer to himself as a guitarist first, astronomer second. Nothing wrong with that.

I to refer to myself as an artist first, editor second.

"Poor" wasn't meant in the monetary sense. But, you may be right. Guess we'll never know.

I can't; I'm in enough trouble around here as it is.

Looks like the Telegraph journalist mis-understood Brian... here's what he has to say:

Just received the book from Amazon and I must say, this is a big book, well over 600 pages. It will certainly keep me busy reading.

I finished reading the Kindle sample and was absorbed throughout. Yes, a page turner for sure.

Being 600+ pages, I feel I ought to buy the hardcopy. The 'real thing' would be a pleasure to read. Is that right? Is it better suited as hardcopy?

I could have bought a Kindle version of the book but I felt a hard copy just seemed better.

I have just finished reading this engrossing account of Patrick's life. I first visited Farthings when I was 14 and ended up serving o the BAA council for a time. The lengths Martin has gone to in ensuring this book is factually accurate are astounding. I found all the pieces of his life that I was aware of being threaded together. Anyone with an interest in amateur astronomy or science in general will enjoy this. I went for the print edition and I am glad I did. Mind you I am of a generation that grew up with nothing else available and although I am typing this on a tablet computer still prefer to have the book in my bookcase. Well done to Martin and also congratulations to Springer for having faith in the author to produce what is a riveting 600 page biography.

Indeed Martin Mobberley did an amazing job... a superb book full of anecdotes on the BIS, BAA, IAU, etc...
Meanwhile there are over 45000 signatures to keep SkyAtNight on BBC TV
