Neptune and Uranus 20th with brightenings
      #6092845 - 09/21/13 04:10 AM Attachment (86 downloads)

I did the same exercise yesterday evening regarding Neptune and Uranus after than the 4-5th observations.
The Neptune feature was at near the limb rising faint still at 20H50UT, still but fading at 21H30UT then not catched after 21H45UT.
Tansparency was 5/6 due to moisture in atmosphere and the presence of an almost full moon glaring the sky.
Any way this present report performed with the 280mm Ultima and 470x, the observer being under a black curtain canopy to prevent parasitic lights.
Regarding Uranus there was some brightenings noted essentially at near the limb of the planet noted with the use of a W12 filter.
Nothing more except adding the fact that the banding structure appears well at 400x with the 280mm.
The session was stopped by the presence of sudden thick cyrrus clouds on the area that cover at final fully the sky.

Beautiful sketches. Nice to see planet rotation on a sketch.

Andre.

Hi Stan,

Uranus: I got a similar feature to you on Sep. 7; though I have not put it on ALPO-J as a seeing breakdown prevented further investigation and satisfying of uncertainties. Also I did not catch any brightness in the other hemisphere.

Note my drawing is presented south up - west (p) left: I understand you have yours north up.

Edit Note:: I have corrected an error on the attachment - Prec[eding] was on the wrong side!

Cheers, David.

Excellent David, 2 separate observations with collecting the same brightening in EZ.
It is easy to catch with the W12 filter from my side.
For the rest we will see.
Good hope.

Thanks a lot Andrev.

Stanislas,

Nice set of observational sketches--I always like to see sequences like these and it is the way to show these subtle brightenings in the cloudtops that you are tracking. These must be very difficult observations to make. Thanks for posting. You and David and Paul are inspiring us planetary observers to take a closer look at the outer Gas Giants.

Thanks Michael for your encouragements.
I think the visual observations merit more place than it is to-day; there is no competition but this is complementary to imaging to such topics for which both methods stay at a margin.
Regarding Neptune, the sequence shows the absence of the "spot" feature when at the meridian area and bright at the limb of the planet and fading with the time when approaching the meridian.
Bright is a strong word, actually, but here and in spite of such confidential brightness levels it is well marked that the light level is variating with the rotation. This is physically characteristic.
Second exercise presently for highligting this.
On Uranus over 3 oppositions, brightnings are relatively frequent on the planet limbs, this was a good start and experience, but easier than presently.
Good hope, thanks a lot again.
Stanislas-Jean

Hi Stan,

Hope you managed to observe last night?

Neptune was hopless here but some results with Uranus, and have just sent the attached off to ALPO-J & Mike Foulkes.

Regards,
David.

Always very good David.
Strongly cloudy yesterday so no possibility.
Being outside until thursday, I cannot perform something and the weather will be fine near Paris on this period.
Good hope.

Here is a sketch of Uranus performed last 4th in the 514mm newtonian of the Copernic Club at Vert. In spite of the magnification in use, the feature seen at the first look was the bright collar between the planet hemispheres and the pôle, with a clear noticeable curvature.
Short time anyway for getting the report, being on an open sky between clouds.
So the bright collar seen curved.

Thanks.
Yesterday I did a check on Uranus and the EZ brigthening is still there. This will be issued soon on the alpo japanese website. Banding around the pole is well seen curved, not straight.
Good hope.

For those interrested by the Uranus subject.
Here is the observations of Uranus of last 18th still performed with the 230mm cassegrain.
Difficult observervation due to the extremly high moisture rate and high moon light.
However the EZ brightening was captured at CM 60° area desmonstrating the fact that is existing.
Not a limb effect (previous observations shown the feature rather at planet limbs).

Hi Stan,

We may be getting the same feature: I've not analysed some earlier sightings as yet but hope to see what comes out toward the end of the apparition. Last night quite the best of recent views - also gone to ALPO-Japan.

Cheers,
David.

Hi David,
Good to see your report.
Probably the same brightening located in EZ around CM60°
What is remarquable this is the fact that it lasts since weeks, may be months.
We will see.
I am waiting the 300mm top level for which 35-40% more contrast is expected. The C11 now is sold.
We have now on Alpo site japanese visual observer(s) on the subject, when they will be "synchronised" on the subject this will be good and when they will be able to go deeper. Able they are.
Good hope.
Stanislas-Jean
