2013-14 Mars Apparition new

Well folks, skilled imagers and observers are already starting to get some images, sketches, and observations of the Red Planet. Never too early to start training your eye--of course, you have to be an early bird right now.

David Gray kicked off the mars drawing season some weeks back with a phenomenal mars rendering...

I got a peek a couple mornings ago with 200x. The planet is still a bit small to be truly satisfying. I was able to discern the polar cap easily and a large dark patch opposite it(mare acidalium) that came and went with the seeing. I am already hooked!

@Pete, thanks for adding that sketch by David Gray--that's the first time I've seen it. It's a beauty.

@buddyjesus, the polar hood/cap must really stand out. I haven't seen Mars yet this apparition but hope to soon.

Thanks Pete and everyone.

I am posting the drawing here if of interest/convenience. Only wish the weather had allowed me to follow it up; and it seems the first of the Autumn storms will soon be upon the UK the coming week .

Cheers,
David.

@buddyjesus, that is what I use to identify what I am seeing on Mars each apparition. I think this is a great tool to use.

David,
That's a terrific sketch! That's the sort of detail I can record only when Mars is a LOT bigger (if even then). I envy you your keen eyesight.
The Elysium/Cebrenia area really stands out; there must have been clouds. The Memnonia-Amazonis-Arcadia complex at the left is amazingly clear, and Zephyria is easily seen bounded to the north by Cerberus and Trivium Charontis.

I swear, the new nomenclature doesn't hold a candle to the old, for the visual observer!

Thanks Rick,

Yes I did feel there was cloud in those regions - part of my frustration for weather denying me follow up. Almost got it this a.m. but then it rained! For the past few weeks the first part of the night has seen the most clear skies here.

Now the gales are here and hoping they are past by midweek; but dubious about seeing prospects.

Agreed re. nomenclature!

Cheers,
David.

I thought it be a good idea to link to it since it was in another thread whose title didnt give away this particular content, though it was a fruitful thread for its own reasons.

Here is a set of Mars images made by Damian Peach on 20 September. Worth a look.

Its hard to believe folks are getting such good views from the tiny , low altitude Mars ,should be a great Mars viewing season.

T5,

I agree--it's amazing what the best imagers can do now. Our time will come, tho.
