Attaching OTA safely
      #6106286 - 09/28/13 04:42 PM

I am a new 8SE owner, and have a query about attaching the OTA safely to the mount.

Every time I do this, I get nervous! It involves an 'embrace' or 'bear hug' with the OTA while you slip the rail into the slot and tighten the locking screw - big sigh of relief when done every time.

I was thinking of using some kind of strap arrangement round the OTA and then around my neck while I do this so, if I fumble the whole thing, then worst case is it just bumps into the mount.

Has anyone tried this kind of thing? if so any pointers? Perhaps I'm just a suffering from 'new acquisition anxiety'

I haven't heard of anyone trying this but it sounds like a good idea. Most people leave the OTA mounted then just carry the whole thing out to the viewing site.

When installing the OTA, depress the mount downward about 15 and slide the tube in from the back. This will allow you to see how well the rail fits into the dovetail slot. It also better exposes the knob below the rail for tightening.

I'm going with that.

I have a 4SE and keep it attached to the mount. I was nervous taking it apart as well. I put that assembly into a box with cushion then all I have to do is attach it to the tripod.

After my OTA got dropped TWICE (luckily no damage) I now leave the OTA on the mount, and occassionally re-tighten the knob if necessary. I just cut the original foam packages to fit the two pieces together and place in my carrying case.

Try a C11 or 14. I don't know why the makers don't just put handles on the d%#$ things. My ex-Nexstar GPS C8 has a handle on the rear cell, which works well, but one on the tube at the balance point is really needed on the larger OTAs.
